El Zonzamas Plus Car Lanzarote could not add points on their visit to Grafometal Sporting La Rioja and fell 25-20 in the match corresponding to the seventh matchday of the Liga Guerreras Iberdrola. The Lanzaroteñas put up a very serious first half in defense, but difficulties in finding the goal and a final stretch in which the home team was superior ended up deciding the match.
The match began with great intensity and tough defenses. The attacks found few spaces and the score advanced slowly, with a 1-1 tie in the 7th minute. El Zonzamas grew from their defensive work and took advantage of transitions to take the lead. Marilia Correia put the visitors ahead in the 8th minute and, with good ball movement, the team managed to open a small gap to 2-5, which led Grafometal to call a timeout in the 14th minute.
La Rioja managed to regain rhythm after that break, but the "batateras" maintained their intensity and continued to find answers from defense. In the 20th minute, the score was 5-7. However, inaccuracies in positional attacks and interventions by the home goalkeeper prevented Zonzamas from extending their lead.
The match became complicated in the final stretch of the first half. The local pivot, Paula Morales, established the 9-9 tie in the 25th minute and visiting exclusions gave Grafometal the opportunity to take the lead. With a 10-9 score in the 28th minute, Sergio Hernández called a timeout, but the home team managed to maintain their lead and went into halftime with an 11-9 advantage.
After the restart, Zonzamas came out more determined and had chances to equalize the match. Marilia reappeared to establish the 13-13 tie in the 40th minute, in a phase of few goals in which Marta Mera also played a leading role between the posts, with important saves to sustain her team. Despite this, the visitors did not manage to take advantage of their opportunities and La Rioja pulled away again.
With a 15-13 score in the 44th minute, Zonzamas called a timeout to try to find solutions in attack. The lack of offensive continuity allowed the La Rioja team to extend their lead to 18-14 in the 49th minute, their biggest difference up to that point. Sergio Hernández stopped the match again and opted for an attack with seven players to seek a comeback.
The sweet potato sellers improved their effectiveness and managed to maintain possession for some time, but each attempt to get closer was met with a response from the home team. With 21-18 in the 53rd minute, it was Grafometal who called a timeout. Zonzamas failed to further reduce the difference and, in the final minutes, the home team managed their lead until closing the match with a final score of 25-20.
The Lanzarote team thus returns empty-handed from Logroño on a day when they once again showed defensive solidity during different phases of the match, but in which the difficulties in converting their attacks into goals ended up weighing too heavily.
