The sweet potato sellers seal a solid 29-23 victory against Balonmano Morvedre, earning two valuable points and gaining breathing room in a tight standings.
Zonzamas Plus Car Lanzarote achieved an important victory this Saturday against Balonmano Morvedre (29-23), in a match corresponding to the eighth round of the Liga Guerreras Iberdrola. The sweet potato team held strong at the Municipal Pavilion of San Bartolomé, dominated a good part of the match, and earned two points that allow them to climb from twelfth to tenth position in the standings.
The match began marked by the defensive intensity of both teams. Defenses prevailed during the first few minutes, and it wasn't until the 5th minute that the first goal was scored, by Brenda Roger. Zonzamas gradually found solutions in attack and managed to open a first gap on the scoreboard. With a 3-0 lead in the 10th minute, Cristina Cabeza called the first timeout of the match.
The visiting team's reaction was not long in coming. Morvedre increased their pace and, taking advantage of a counter-attack by Suhana Bayonas, managed to tie the score at four goals in the 15th minute. Shortly after, Sandra Radovic put the Valencian team ahead from seven meters (4-5), forcing Sergio Hernández to stop the game. After the timeout, the sweet potato sellers regained control and found their way to the opponent's goal again.
The match continued to be hard-fought and low-scoring, with very demanding defenses, but Zonzamas went through their best minutes before halftime. The offensive contribution of Gleinys Reyes and Zaliata Mlamali allowed them to regain the lead, while Brenda Roger extended the difference to 14-9 in the 29th minute, the largest lead up to that point. The halftime score was a favorable 15-10.
The second half started with more pace, and the Lanzarote team knew how to take advantage of it to extend their lead. A counter-attack finished by Zaliata Mlamali made it 18-12 in the 36th minute, and with a 19-12 score, Cristina Cabeza called another timeout. Morvedre tried to find more offensive continuity, but Zonzamas responded to every attempt to get closer and maintained control of the match.
In the 47th minute, the score was 22-15. Although the home team went through some minutes of less offensive success afterwards, the accumulated advantage allowed them to manage the game with tranquility. Brenda Roger and Amagoia Laínez, who scored five goals in her goal-scoring debut in the Liga Guerreras Iberdrola, contributed to maintaining the differences.
With the score at 27-20 in the 54th minute, Sergio Hernández called a timeout to organize the final minutes and correct some defensive mismatches resulting from fatigue. Morvedre hardened their defense and tried to close the gap, but Zonzamas managed their lead until the end of the match with a final score of 29-23.
The victory has special value for the "batateras," who move up to tenth position and gain some margin in a very tight standings. Two important points to regain confidence and face the upcoming matches with greater tranquility.
