The Lanzarote expedition of the OneChess club participated in the XVIII Pedro Lezcano Montalvo Memorial International Chess Open, one of the most demanding events on the calendar, held from March 28 to April 5 in Gran Canaria. A high-level tournament that brought together 150 players from different countries and in which each round tested the preparation and competitive spirit.
The championship crowned Indian Grandmaster Gupta Sankalp, but beyond the title, the OneChess team left good impressions. Luis Menéndez achieved the best performance of the group with a 61st place, followed by Marcelino Ramos (66th) and Katharina Bangiev (72nd), all competing solidly in a highly demanding environment.
The proper name went to Shenghao Li, who starred in a notable progression by adding 113.2 Elo points, a reflection of his growth during the tournament, where he finished in 84th place.
Beyond the results, participation reinforces the upward trend of Lanzarote chess, which will continue to raise the competitive level of the island in the coming years.
