Island athletics has once again reached the highest level of the international scene. The Lanzarotean athlete, based and trained in Arrecife, Samuel Lariño Fernández, known in the sport as “Samu Lariño”, a runner for the EAMJ Playas de Jandía club, was proclaimed last weekend World Champion of Marathon by Teams in the M40 category with Spain, during the World Masters Athletics Championships held in Zagreb (Croatia).
In a race of maximum international demand over 42.195 meters, the Lanzarotean long-distance runner completed a solid race that placed him in a distinguished 9th individual position worldwide in the M40 category.
His performance was decisive for the final classification of the Spanish team. With the sum of points, Samu Lariño, along with his teammates Miguel Araque, Francisco Urbano “Pulguilla”, and Jesús Fernández “Chuchi”, won the gold medal, being crowned World Masters Marathon Champions by Teams M40 with Spain.
A golden finish to an impeccable international season in master athletics
This world title is the finishing touch to an extraordinary year for the EAMJ Playas de Jandía long-distance runner. The gold in Zagreb culminates a streak of great successes that recently began at the European Masters Road Championships held in Catania (Italy), where he won silver and bronze medals in the 10k, Half Marathon, and Cross Country events.
With these international achievements on road and cross country, the Lanzarotean runner concludes an outstanding season for Lanzarotean and Canary Islands athletics, continuing his preparation in the island capital for the next objectives on the calendar.
