The Cabildo of Lanzarote recently received a visit from the world champion of handbike, Jonas Van Steene, a Belgian athlete who recently won the Vuelta a Playa Blanca Handbike.
The president of the Corporation, Oswaldo Betancort, assured that Van de Steene is "a top-level athlete, a lover of Lanzarote and the nature that the island offers for practicing sports." "We welcome a world champion in a modality that is increasingly practiced, such as handbike, which fills us with pride and demonstrates the sporting potential that our island has," he added.
The Minister of Sports, Juan Monzón, also congratulated the athlete "for the undeniable victory last weekend in Playa Blanca." "We knew about the potential of Jonas Van de Steene, and we are convinced that he has many challenges and many prizes to achieve in his career," he asserted.
Jonas Van de Steene was crowned world champion of handbike last year in Glasgow with a time of 1:33:50, and is currently preparing to attend the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
