The excitement remained intact until the last corner of the XIX RallySprint La Candelaria, a scoring event for the Canary Islands and Las Palmas RallySprint Championship and the Lanzarote Insular Championship. The event, organized by Escudería Lanzarote, gave fans a heart-stopping conclusion that was decided by the smallest of margins: a single tenth.
‘Toñín’ Suárez and Kimberly González, at the wheel of their Porsche 997 GT3 Cup Rallye 2010, marked their territory from the start by winning the first stage, Tías – San Bartolomé (7.005 km), with a time of 3:10.2, ahead of the great favorites, Yeray Lemes and Aitor Cambeiro, island and provincial champions in 2025, who competed with their Citroën C3 Rally2, by 2.2 seconds.
The reaction from the Rally2 team was not long in coming. Lemes and Cambeiro took the next three timed stages —San Bartolomé – Tías and the second runs through both specials—, cutting 1.6 and 1.0 seconds respectively to take the lead by just 0.4 seconds, leaving everything open before the final loop.
With only two special stages left to contest and a minimal lead for Citroën, the tension was at its peak. In the penultimate timed stage, Suárez and González broke their rivals' streak and regained the lead after gaining 1.8 seconds on them. They thus faced the final stretch with a 1.4-second margin.
In the final special stage, Lemes and Cambeiro attacked without reservations and were the fastest, cutting 1.3 seconds. However, it was not enough. Suárez and González maintained a 0.1-second lead in the final standings, signing an agonizing and memorable victory. Any tighter, and it would be impossible.
At a greater distance, third place went to Álvaro Caballero and Noé González (BMW M3 E46), at 1:33.5 and despite a ten-second penalty, consolidating the last step of the podium after an intense fight with Rayco Rodríguez and Christopher Rijo (Citroën DS3 R3T Max), fourth 5.7 seconds behind the former.
Julián Arrocha and M. Alejandro García (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX) completed the ‘top 5’, followed by Yoday Betancort and Daniela Betancort (Peugeot 208 Rally4), and the Tenerife natives Adrián Chávez and Cristian Pérez (Suzuki Swift R4LLY S Rally2-Kit).
The organization thanked the support of collaborating institutions and companies, whose support was key to the success of a test that once again demonstrated the excellent health of Lanzarote motorsport and which is now etched as one of the most exciting editions in its history.
