The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through its president, María Dolores Corujo, and the Minister of Sports, Francisco Javier Aparicio, convey their congratulations to the athlete from San Bartolomé, Roberto Betancort Corujo, for his more than meritorious position in the "Ironman" triathlon world championship held yesterday in Hawaii (USA).
"It is an immense pride that Roberto takes the name of our island and our people to such a demanding test as this, competing on the other side of the world," declared María Dolores Corujo.
The Minister of Sports, Security and Emergencies, Francisco Javier Aparicio, wanted to highlight that Betancort, who is a firefighter of the Security and Emergency Consortium of Lanzarote, "is an example of teamwork and integration with his colleagues, in addition to his humility as a person."
The Ironman World Championship in Hawaii "Kona" consists of a 226.7-kilometer course that is done by bicycle, swimming and finally running, being one of the most demanding tests in the world. In this year's edition, 2,272 people have participated, competing in a volcanic environment - similar to that of Lanzarote - with temperatures of 35º and crosswinds of up to 72 km/h.
