The children's women's team of CD Magec Tías, under the name Desatascos Timanfaya Magec Tías, has achieved a notable regional runner-up title that also grants them qualification for the Spanish Championship of clubs. The Lanzarote team put on a brilliant performance last weekend at the José Perdomo Umpiérrez Pavilion, in Corralejo, consolidating itself as one of the benchmarks of women's grassroots basketball in the Canary Islands.

During the group stage, the team led by Jesús García showed a high competitive level. The players defeated the Felipe Antón Basketball School and Canterbury School, only losing to C.B. La Salle San Ildefonso by a difference of four points, a fact that did not prevent the Lanzaroteño team from advancing as group leader.

In the semifinals, the Lanzarote team starred in one of the most exciting matches of the championship against Nuryana. The 60-58 victory, in a game marked by equality and intensity, was backed by numerous fans who traveled from Lanzarote, crossing the La Bocaina strait to support the team.

This triumph not only meant advancing to the final, but also qualifying for the Spanish U13 Women's Championship, which will be held in the Huelva towns of Huelva, Aljaraque, Punta Umbría and Palos de la Frontera, from May 31 to June 6.

In the final, played again in Corralejo, Desatascos Timanfaya Magec Tías had the opportunity to make amends against C.B. La Salle San Ildefonso. However, the team from Tenerife once again prevailed, this time by 59 to 64, in a very competitive match that was decided in the final minutes.

After the competition, coach Jesús García positively assessed the team's performance: “The team has competed at a very high level during the four days of competition. It has grown during the championship, repeating last season's final,” also highlighting that “it is an enormous success that will be valued over time.”

This achievement takes on a historic dimension for Lanzarote's basketball. 25 years have passed since the first, and last, participation of a team from the island in a national women's championship. That generation of 87 from Magec Tías, led by Leocadio Pérez and Juan Ángel Fernández, reached the runner-up position in Spain in the School Age Championship, the name it had at that time, organized that year by the Higher Sports Council in León.

Now, a new generation made up of Carlota Armas, Maya Gal, Maya Mortimer, Paula Blanco, Ainhoa García, Yara Armas, Daniela Pérez, Chloe Curbelo, Estela Hernández, Julieta Rodríguez, Alexia Sosa and Krishi Hathiramani, under the technical direction of Jesús García, Coraima García and David Hassan, will have the opportunity to represent Lanzarote on the national stage, returning the club and the island to a top-level event after a quarter of a century.

The regional runner-up title not only certifies the excellent grassroots work of CD Magec Tías, but also opens an exciting new chapter for Lanzarote women's basketball, which is once again placing itself on the national competitive map with a solid and promising project.
