Lionel Morales from Lanzarote has had a great start to this long weekend, where he faced two challenges. On one hand, this Saturday he faced the Duathlon World Championship in Avilés, and on the other, this Sunday, the Strathclyde ITU, a stage of the world series held in Scotland.
The athlete from Punta Mujeres, who "attacked" the peninsular event after being proclaimed Champion of Spain, had the challenge of demonstrating his worth against strong rivals, such as the Italian Alessandro Carvani, but without "spending all the fuel" to have the strength to face the Scottish event, with points at stake for the upcoming Rio Olympics.
In the first part of the event, the duathletes had to face a 5-kilometer athletic circuit, which Lionel Morales finished with a time of 22'26", occupying the second place overall, 16 seconds behind his transalpine rival. It was in the cycling sector of just over 21 kilometers where the current Champion of Spain showed his quality and perseverance until he caught up with the Italian and overtook him, finishing this sector with a time of 37'50", just over 2' ahead of Alessandro Carvani, who saw how the event was starting to have a clear Spanish color. The advantage was extended in the last athletic sector, where the 2500-meter circuit was "devoured" by the Lanzarote native in 11'19", extending the differences with his pursuers by achieving the best times on the bicycle and in the second part of athletics, stopping the clock at 1:12'41", followed by Alessandro Carvani with 1:15'27" and the Spaniard David Mata with 1:21'07".
