Mixed 470 Podium of the Lanzarote International Regatta 2025

Lanzarote International Regatta 2025 has come to an end after ten days of intense competition at Marina Rubicón, establishing itself as one of the essential events on the Olympic sailing calendar. The event has marked the beginning of the cycle towards Los Angeles 2028, becoming an idyllic setting due to its magnificent wind and sea conditions perfect for sailing. In addition, the Canary Islands Snipe fleet has once again proven to be the most powerful in the country.

During this second and final phase of the regatta, the winners in the different categories showed a high level of performance and preparation. The Dutchman Duko Bos took the victory in ILCA 7, followed by the Montenegrin Mikivoj Dukic, who retained the silver, and the Dutchman Thomas van Ofwegen, who managed to sneak onto the podium at the last minute, taking the bronze.

470 Mixed, vibrant regatta

After two intense races marked by close surveillance between the leaders, Diogo Costa and Carolina Joao, and their pursuers, Silvia Mas and Alex Marsans, everything was pending the last race of the championship. Nerves were on edge until the last moment, with Portuguese and Spaniards tied at the top of the standings with 20 points each.

Finally, the duo of Diogo Costa and Carolina Joao managed to win after a hard-fought competition against the Spaniards Silvia Mas and Alex Marsans, who came second. The podium was completed by Bea Gago and Rodolfo Pires, the other Portuguese crew that will fight to be in Los Angeles 2028.

Canary Islands stands out again in Snipe

About 20 boats from the nautical clubs of Arrecife, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Castillo del Águila (Playa Blanca) took the starting line. Among the most prominent figures of the fleet, numerous well-known faces of Canary Islands and world sailing, such as Alicia Cebriá from Tenerife -Olympian in London 2012 and Rio 2016- and Julia Marfil -European and Spanish runner-up-; as well as Gustavo del Castillo -world runner-up and three-time European champion- and Christian Sánchez from Lanzarote -world champion in 2022-.

Precisely Del Castillo and Sánchez, who come from winning the Canary Islands Snipe Cup last weekend, have positioned themselves as the leaders of Lanzarote International Regatta; followed by Miguel Ángel Naverán and Luis Hernández, who obtained the silver; and the locals Rafael Lasso and Gonzalo Morales, from the Club Deportivo Náutico Castilla del Águila.

In addition to the great sporting spectacle, Lanzarote International Regatta has once again left a significant economic and social impact on the island. The combination of unbeatable weather conditions and the first-class infrastructure of Marina Rubicón have made Lanzarote a benchmark destination for high-competition sailing. Among others, it should be noted that the entire Dutch team is training in the bay of Playa Blanca. The Dutch have chosen the island as a base for their winter Olympic preparation, including all classes.

"Every year, this regatta reaffirms Lanzarote's commitment to elite nautical sports, positioning the island as a center of excellence for world sailing. The quality of the athletes, together with the privileged environment offered by Marina Rubicón and Lanzarote as a whole, have made this edition a spectacular event," said Rafael Lasso, CEO of Marina Rubicón. "We have been adding new classes such as the ILCA, which next year will compete here for the U-21 World Championship in January, and we also wanted to give space to Canary Islands sailing through the Snipe," he added.

With this closing, Lanzarote International Regatta 2025 says goodbye until next year, leaving an indelible mark on the road to the 2028 Olympic Games.

The event has been organized by Marina Rubicón and has been sponsored by Turismo Lanzarote through its sports initiative Lanzarote Sports Destination, the Cabildo de Lanzarote, the Art, Culture and Tourism Centers of the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the Yaiza City Council, in addition to the collaboration of the Canary Islands Sailing Federation, DinghyCoach and the island federations of Vela Latina, among others.
