More than 700 children participated in the closing of the project "Initiation to the Traditional Sports Games of the Canary Islands", held on Friday, December 16. This is a project promoted and sponsored by the Island Sports Service of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, directed by the councilor José Alfredo Mendoza Camacho and executed by "Senderismo Lanzarote" for four months in thirteen educational centers. They have taught theoretical-practical workshops on the games and traditional sports of the Canary Islands to students, preferably in the fifth and sixth grades, with a total of 1600 students participating.
The students from 13 infant and primary education centers enjoyed several games throughout the morning, such as Canarian wrestling, hoop racing, billarda, pina, pelotamano, Canarian ball, tángana, etc. Up to a total of 32 game stations, where the children had fun developing the knowledge acquired in the months of workshops they had already taken in their educational centers.
According to Mendoza, who positively valued the great reception of the project in the island's educational community, "this Canarian sports Olympics is an unforgettable moment for most of the students." He also pointed out that "it is one of the few projects where students from one educational center exchange with those from other educational centers in another part of the island."
The students of the TESEAS higher education cycle of the IES Blas Cabrera and the monitors of Senderismo Lanzarote were in charge of energizing and animating this great event, which ended with a vibrant exhibition of Canarian wrestling.
