For the third consecutive year, the Basque swimmer Guillermo Verdejo won the La Bocaina Swimming Crossing and did so by setting the best time in the history of the crossing that connects Playa Blanca (Lanzarote) with Corralejo (Fuerteventura). Guillermo needed 3 hours, 39 minutes and 44 seconds to swim the 15 kilometers of the race and reach the shore on the island of Fuerteventura. In the women's category, the winner was Miryam Gómez.
Nearly a hundred swimmers took the start of the XIII La Bocaina Swimming Crossing on Saturday morning. The swimmers were divided into groups. The swimmers in the slow group, identified with a yellow cap, started at 08:00 hours. Five minutes later, those in the middle group, who wore a green cap, did so. And at 08:11 hours it was the turn of those in the fast group, who were identified with the red cap. Halfway through the crossing, the swimmers in the fast group had already overtaken the rest of the competitors.
Guillermo Verdejo led the race from the start, although the group remained together until they reached the island of Lobos. It was from that moment that Verdejo went straight, leaving the rest of the competitors with no options. The Basque swimmer completed the 15 kilometers of the course in a time of 3 hours, 39 minutes and 44 seconds, a mark that becomes a new record for the race. The second place overall went to Rafael Henríquez, 1 minute and 3 seconds behind the winner. The third place was awarded to Airam Rodríguez, 6 minutes and 34 seconds behind the winner.
In the women's category, the winner was Myriam Gómez, 37 years old. The swimmer from Seville was the first time she participated in the Travesía a La Bocaina and stated upon arrival at the finish line that "the sea was a real swimming pool". She invested a time of 4 hours, 6 minutes and 58 seconds. The second place overall went to Saray Hernández from Lanzarote, who confirmed the excellent season she had in swimming crossings. The XIII La Bocaina Swimming Crossing was organized once again by Club Vulcano, with the collaboration of the town councils of Yaiza and La Oliva. The organizers wanted to highlight the good role played by the young Jorge Robayna. At 14 years of age, he was the youngest swimmer, taking 3 hours and 55 minutes to connect Playa Blanca with Corralejo. And Mauricio O´Shanahan, 70 years old, led the veterans' classification, marking a time of 4 hours and 46 minutes.
Throughout the day on Saturday, the exciting scenes were repeated again upon the arrival of the swimmers, who were received with affection by their families. In addition, many fans wanted to accompany the swimmers at the start and finish. The Sports Councilors of La Oliva and Yaiza, Iballa Martínez and Rafael Tavío, together with the coordinator of the race Óliver Acuña, were in charge of presenting the trophies to the winners. A swimming crossing that had the participation of 85 swimmers of which 72 finished.
