The Haría City Council and the Unión Norte Orvecame Wrestling Club paid tribute this Saturday to Mateo Hernández in an emotional event held at the Terrero Luis Montero Barreto, where family members, friends, fans, wrestlers, and institutional representatives gathered to recognize his career and contribution to Canarian wrestling and the municipality during his lifetime.
The evening was marked by respect and emotion towards a figure closely linked to the history of the club and vernacular sport in Lanzarote. During the event, Mateo Hernández's sporting career was highlighted, as well as his commitment to Canarian wrestling, his dedication on the sand, and his role as a role model for values such as effort, humility, and respect.
The recognition, jointly promoted by the Haría City Council and the Unión Norte Orvecame Wrestling Club, aimed to publicly thank his contribution to the development of Canarian wrestling and his contribution to strengthening the sporting and social fabric of the municipality.
One of the most emotional moments of the night was the screening of a video of about five minutes in which friends, wrestling partners, and people who shared experiences with Mateo Hernández conveyed messages of affection, admiration, and remembrance. The audiovisual testimony highlighted the human and sporting legacy he has left over the years, moving those present.
The ceremony also included various gestures of recognition from entities and individuals historically linked to the club. Among them, the San Bartolomé Graficame Faycán Automoción Wrestling Club, chaired by José Hernández, joined the tribute with a token of recognition for the sporting career of Don Mateo Hernández, reinforcing the bonds of brotherhood between Canarian wrestling clubs.
Marisol Pérez Feo, mother of the late Vicente Hernández, former president of the Unión Norte Orvecame Wrestling Club, also participated, wanting to make a special gesture to the honoree on a night filled with sentiment and memory for the club's family.
The organization emphasized the importance of these types of recognitions for preserving the memory of those who have significantly contributed to the history of sport and serving as an example for new generations of wrestlers.
The event concluded with a message of thanks to all attendees and with the unanimous recognition of Don Mateo Hernández, whose career is permanently linked to the history of the Club de Lucha Unión Norte Orvecame and the municipality of Haría.
