The sailors of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife were present this past weekend at the Cantabria Optimist Championship, a competition chosen by the Royal Canarian Sailing Federation as part of the preparation of the Canarian team for the Spanish Optimist Championship. The sailors from Lanzarote had a great performance in the bay of Santander, highlighting the fourth place overall of Pedro Medina.

The optimist team of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife traveled last Thursday to Santander, participating in the Cantabria Optimist Championship. The expedition was composed of Pedro Medina Martín, Mateo Roa Nieves, Unai de Ugarte Herrera and Fayna Tavío Gutiérrez in the sub'16 category, and Julián Suárez Sperner in the sub'13 category. The five sailors were accompanied by Carlos Hidalgo Perdomo as coach.

The first day was marked by little wind, blowing with an intensity of 5-6 knots from the northeast. The conditions improved substantially on Sunday morning in the bay of Santander, with the races developing with a northeast wind of 15 knots of intensity. Despite the problems on Saturday, the six scheduled races were completed.

Pedro Medina was just short of the podium in the overall standings, finishing the Cantabria Optimist Championship as fourth overall, and third in the sub'16 male category. His teammate Mateo Roa was sixth overall and fourth in the sub'16 male, and Unai de Ugarte was tenth overall and sixth in the sub'16.

Among the top twenty in the overall standings, Fayna Tavío finished the competition, with the sailor from the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife finishing in 19th position overall and eighth in the sub'16 female category. The Lanzarote performance was completed by Julián Suárez, a sailor who was fourth in the sub'13 male category.

The results confirm the good work of the optimist team of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife, demonstrating that they are more than prepared for the next event on the national calendar of the class. From April 14 to 21 they will compete in Santander, in the same regatta course where the Cantabria Championship was held, the Spanish Optimist Championship.
