La Graciosa hosts the V Latin Sailing Meeting – Líneas Romero Foundation Trophy

A total of 20 boats from Lanzarote, La Graciosa, Fuerteventura, and Gran Canaria will compete for the title in this edition

The island of La Graciosa is preparing to host on November 28, 29, and 30 the V Meeting of Latin Sailboats – Fundación Líneas Romero Trophy, an event that consolidates its role as one of the most prominent dates in the Canary Islands' Latin sailing calendar.

Organized by Fundación Líneas Romero, the Canary Islands Latin Sailboat Federation, and the Lanzarote Insular Latin Sailboat Federation, the event is supported by the Teguise City Council, the Cabildo de Lanzarote, and La Graciosa Maritime Freight Transport.

The press conference, held this Tuesday morning at the Casa-Museo del Timple, brought together the vice-president of the Líneas Romero Foundation, Luis Romero; the president of the Canary Federation of Latin Sail Barquillos, Luis Toledo; the president of the Lanzarote Insular Federation of Latin Sail, Juan Pérez; the mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque; and the councilor for Sports of Teguise, Alejandro Ramírez. In addition, it was enlivened by the timple player Gabriel Cubas. 

 

Vessels from all islands in the province of Las Palmas

This year, 20 vessels will participate, selected according to sporting and island representation criteria, guaranteeing diverse and balanced participation.

"The event will feature boats from La Graciosa, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and Gran Canaria, including the island champions from each island and the six vessels from the municipality of Teguise with direct invitations. After the corresponding participation draw, the final list was completed, reflecting the growing involvement and competitiveness of Latin sailing in the Canary Islands," explained Juan Pérez, president of the Insular Federation of Latin Sailing of Lanzarote.The participating vessels will be: Graciplus, Di Napolis, CRI, La Graciosera, Guatiza, Romerito, Federico Pescamar, Isla Graciosa, Cid Náutico, Pleamar, Gran Canaria, Tritón, Bernasán, Furia II, Playa Blanca, Furia, Cid Náuticos I (69), Península de Jandía, La Oliva es tu deporte, and Jameos del Agua.
 

A weekend to experience seafaring tradition

Luis Toledo, president of the Canary Federation of Latin Sail Barges, reviewed the weekend's agenda, highlighting that "the activity will begin on Friday the 28th with the reception of crews in Caleta del Sebo. On Saturday the 29th, we will have creative workshops for all ages starting at 10:00 AM, Latin sail baptisms at 10:30 AM, and, starting at 1:00 PM, the first day of races, for which the organization will provide an accompanying boat. The competitions will continue on Sunday the 30th at 10:00 AM and will culminate with the trophy presentation at 2:00 PM".

From the Teguise City Council, Mayor Olivia Duque expressed her support for the Latin sailing event on the island of La Graciosa, highlighting "the work done by the groups and individuals involved, and reaffirming that the City Council will continue to support, promote, and foster these initiatives." "This event is fundamental to showcase and teach our traditional sport, to value our environment, and to encourage the care of the territory, because Latin sailing not only represents a sporting practice, but it constitutes an essential part of our culture and identity," she stated. 

The Teguise Sports Councilor, Alejandro Ramírez, in addition to expressing his gratitude to the Foundation, stated his support for the event and highlighted that "from the Sports Department, we continue to bet on traditional activities such as Latin sailing, which allows us to bring this discipline closer to and make it known to new audiences."

Likewise, Luis Romero, representing the Líneas Romero Foundation, recalled that "the sea is part of our identity and our way of understanding Canarian culture. That is why we believe in promoting activities that originate from our environment, that respect it, and that, at the same time, foster values that we consider essential: shared effort, companionship, and personal improvement," highlighting the entity's commitment to tradition, sport, and the historical link with La Graciosa.

The V Latin Sailing Encounter once again offers the public the chance to follow the regattas from the sea thanks to the boat enabled for this purpose. An experience that allows you to closely witness the excitement of one of the archipelago's most emblematic nautical practices.
