Gallery: El Jable de San Bartolomé and Altavista de Arrecife, winners of the XXIV Canarian Ball Tournament

In the men's category, La Atalaya from the municipality of Yaiza, took second place, while in the women's category it was Las Atrevidas, who took second position.

XXIV TORNEO ABUELOS CONEJEROS (67)

The Island Sports Service closed, on this Saturday, the XXIV edition of the Abuelos Conejeros Tournament which ended with the victory of El Jable de San Bartolomé in the men's category and Altavista de Arrecife in the women's category. 

At the trophy presentation ceremony, the president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort; the Minister of Physical Activity and Sports, Juan Monzón; the mayor of Arrecife, host of this edition, Yonathan de León; and the mayors of the municipalities of San Bartolomé, Haría, Tías, Yaiza and Teguise; as well as a representation from the municipality of Tinajo, were present. 

The president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, assured that this tournament "has allowed the perpetuation and promotion of a Canarian heritage such as our native sport". "I congratulate enormously each and every one of the participants, the town councils and all those who have allowed this important event to be repeated for another year, which allows us to continue with our active aging plan so that our elders practice sports and our traditions," he stated. 

For his part, the Minister of Physical Activity and Sports, Juan Monzón, highlighted "the strengthening of such an important event for the island calendar as this one". "Nearly 1,000 seniors have gathered, every Wednesday from November until this very week, to practice one of our archipelago's native sports, which is Canarian ball. It is, without a doubt, a special moment for our elders," pointed out the minister, who also congratulated the entire human team of the Island Sports Service for the commendable work done and had words of remembrance for three participants who passed away during the tournament: Juan Guillén de León (Los Llanos de Muñique); Domingo Manuel Lemes Hernández (Unión de Tao); and Pedro Ezequiel Toribio Hernández (El Hornillo). 

The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, highlighted "the great turnout of seniors who have gathered in the capital during these months". "The coordination between the City Council and the Island Sports Service has made it possible for this event to be a success for another year," added the mayor, who also expressed the honor for the municipality of Arrecife "to have been the epicenter of Canarian ball at the island level".

In the men's category, after the victory of El Jable de San Bartolomé, in second place was La Atalaya from the municipality of Yaiza; San Francisco Javier de Arrecife in third place and Los Roquitos A de Tinajo as fourth classified. 

As for the women's category, after the Altavista de Arrecife team, Las Atrevidas from the capital came in second position; while La Huerta Vieja de Yaiza achieved third place and Papagayo, also from the south of the island, in fourth position.

At the end of the event, the mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, symbolically handed over the baton to the mayor of Haría, Alfredo Villalba, as the northern municipality will be responsible for hosting the XXV edition of this tournament.
