The Puerto Calero Lanzarote 52 SUPER SERIES Royal Cup is already underway. The 13 teams of 11 nationalities who will fight for the fourth event of the 52 SUPER SERIES 2026 took advantage of the traditional official training day to make contact with the Puerto Calero race course, where the Royal Cup will be at stake until next Saturday with up to ten scoring races over five days of pure sailing spectacle.
The official training day took place in substantially milder wind conditions than those that welcomed the fleet last month on its Canary Islands debut in Marina Rubicón. The Race Committee, led by María Torrijo, established the race area three miles south of the event headquarters in Puerto Calero, "further away than we expect to sail throughout the week," explained the Alicante native. "There were two different winds, and to try to keep the direction constant across the entire course, we had to move a bit further away. We had over 15 knots constant from the east, with a bit of swell. A very good day."
The day's program consisted of two practice starts and two short two-leg races. The Dutch team No Way Back won the first race and the Italian team Alkedo Vitamina won the second, results that do not count towards the standings but corroborate the idea that, in such a compact fleet, there is no clear favorite. 13 teams of 11 nationalities will compete for the Puerto Calero Lanzarote 52 SUPER SERIES Royal Cup.
Much at stake
In addition to competing in the prestigious Royal Cup, the fourth event of the season is crucial for the teams' aspirations in the battle for the 'big prize': the 52 SUPER SERIES 2026 title. Leading the provisional standings, Takashi Okura's Sled holds a 17-point advantage over Harm Müller-Spreer's Platoon Aviation. The German team arrives in Puerto Calero eager to replicate their performance from the last day of the previous event, where they redeemed themselves from a week of setbacks by winning the two races that concluded the championship. Platoon Aviation has won the Royal Cup on three occasions (2021, 2023, and 2024) and faces Puerto Calero as one of the most serious contenders for the title. Third overall, 20 points behind Sled, the Italian team Alkedo Vitamina – which joined the circuit last year – showed excellent adaptation to the conditions in Lanzarote and achieved a magnificent second place in Marina Rubicón behind the historic first victory of the French team Paprec, which is also showing excellent progress and will be among the teams to beat.
Awaiting a "badly behaved" low-pressure system
Looking ahead to the competition week, the fleet and organization are monitoring the evolution of a low-pressure system over the Iberian Peninsula that is affecting the wind behavior in Lanzarote. Nacho Postigo, a navigator from Provezza, explained: "The weather these days is conditioned by a 'badly behaved' low-pressure system. A 'well-behaved' low usually passes through England, but this one is entering through the Peninsula, which has disrupted the trade wind flow, and it will take a couple of days until it moves inland and stabilizes. As this low enters Spain and France, the wind will shift more to the right and will fill the race area." The Puerto Calero Lanzarote 52 SUPER SERIES Royal Cup will begin with moderate winds and will conclude under the influence of the famous trade winds, the engine of summer in the Canary Islands.
Official Presentation
The event that serves as the starting gun for the Puerto Calero Lanzarote 52 SUPER SERIES Royal Cup began with the official presentation. The event was attended by Agustín Zulueta, CEO of 52 SUPER SERIES; Jose Juan Calero, CEO of Calero Marinas; and four Spanish sailors representing the nearly 170 from 23 nationalities who will compete this week in Lanzarote: Víctor Mariño, bowman of Platoon Aviation; Pablo Arrarte, trimmer of Alegre; Nacho Postigo, navigator of Provezza; and Manu Weiller, tactician of Vayu.
Zulueta took the opportunity to thank Puerto Calero for their organizational effort and the institutions for their commitment to making the 52 SUPER SERIES double event possible "in one of the best regatta courses in the world." Calero highlighted the importance of this event, which brings the TP52 fleet back to Calero Marinas 18 years after the World Championship of the class held at this same venue in 2008. The sailors agreed in highlighting the quality of the venue, the spectacular nature of the sailing conditions, and in anticipating a spectacular battle for the title in Lanzarote waters.
The Puerto Calero Lanzarote 52 SUPER SERIES Royal Cup will consist of five days of competition and up to ten races between Tuesday, August 25th, and Saturday, the 29th. The action will begin on Tuesday at 13:00h (local time, 14:00h in mainland Spain).
The competition will be broadcast live on the official 52 SUPER SERIES platforms in English and Spanish.
