Dozens of Latin sailing fans were stationed from 11:00 a.m. this Sunday, June 6, on the famous stone and the Playa Blanca promenade to enjoy a new day of regattas of the V Latin Sailing Cup of the South of 5-Meter Skiffs. Two regattas were scheduled for the day, which made up the Castillo Águila Trophy, but finally and due to the suspension of the two scheduled for last week due to weather conditions, the organization decided that the first of the day would be valid to recover the Piedra Playa Blanca Trophy, leaving both trophies with a single scoring regatta.

With twelve skiffs and a downwind start very close to the coast for the enjoyment of the fans, the first regatta of the day started with good sea and wind conditions for navigation and a great desire to resume the competition by skippers and crew. A very close regatta with constant changes in the first positions, which was finally awarded to the southern skiff Bernasan with Gonzalo Morales at the helm. The second place went to another skiff from the south, the Tritón of Cristian Sánchez, and the Romerito, skippered by David Martín, completed the podium of the Piedra Playa Blanca Trophy. The majorero Di Napoli Isidoro and Manuela III, with José Pascual Perdomo at the helm, entered in fourth position.

The wind gained strength and throughout the second regatta the navigation conditions became a little tougher. The Di Napoli Isidoro and Manuela III made a good start and a great reading of the regatta course and conditions, staying in the lead in the buoy passes and crossing the finish line in first position, thus winning the Castillo Águila Trophy. The Romerito of David Martín once again signed an excellent performance, sneaking into second place, while the Jameos del Agua, with Alfredo Morales at the helm, closed the podium. The Playa Blanca and the Bernasan, for their part, finished in fourth and fifth position respectively, while the Tritón had to settle on this occasion with the eighth place.

With these two new scoring regattas, a total of five of the V Latin Sailing Cup of the South have already been held, allowing the first discard to be applied, which leaves the provisional general classification with the skiff from Fuerteventura Di Napoli Isidoro and Manuela III in the lead with 9 points, completing the provisional podium the Playa Blanca of Virginia Morales with 12 points and the Tritón with 13. Very closely followed by the Graciplús, with 14 points, the Jameos del Agua with 15, the Bernasan with 18 and the Romerito with 19.

Maximum equality at the head of the classification and, therefore, maximum emotion also for the next and last day that will be held this Saturday, July 12, starting at 3:30 p.m., in the bay of Playa Blanca.

If the weather permits, two new short downwind regattas will be held, which will correspond to the sixth and seventh of the cup competition and which will make up the Ntra. Sra. del Carmen Trophy, integrated into the festive program of the patron saint of the town and which will be in charge of putting the finishing touch to this fifth edition of the Latin Sailing Cup of the South organized by the Yaiza City Council, with the support of the Latin Sailing Federation of Lanzarote and the collaboration of Marina Rubicón.

“We are enjoying a spectacular Cup, with maximum equality and a great technical level”, highlights the Councilor for Sports of Yaiza, Ángel Lago, while encouraging all fans to continue enjoying the show. “This Saturday we will have a very exciting final and, if the weather permits, the starts will also be downwind so that residents and tourists can enjoy from the promenade or our favorite meeting place, the famous Playa Blanca stone, which this year has given its name to one of the trophies and has also been won by the Bernasan, one of our lifelong skiffs”, concludes the mayor proudly.
