CD Pingüinos de Arrecife Makes History at the Spanish Championship

The artistic swimming team is proclaimed runner-up in the Spanish Club Championship in the children's category

Spanish Artistic Swimming Championship

The artistic swimming of the island of Lanzarote has nothing to envy from the rest of the country, and this is partly due to the work that is done daily at the Club Deportivo Pingüinos de Arrecife, a club that develops its activity in the facilities of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife. The CD Pingüinos de Arrecife has signed this past weekend a historic performance in the Spanish Alevín and Infantil Winter Championship, proclaiming itself runner-up by clubs in the children's category and winning several medals.

The Piscina do Sur, in Pontevedra, hosted a new edition of the Spanish Alevín and Infantil Winter Artistic Swimming Championship. A competition that brought together more than 700 swimmers from all over the country, and to which the CD Pingüinos de Arrecife traveled with an expedition of 22 members (12 children and 10 alevines).

The children's category signed an outstanding performance, with the CD Pingüinos de Arrecife proclaimed runner-up in Spain in a competition in which 41 clubs participated. A result that allows them to qualify for the First Division, a historic milestone for the club and that confirms its position in the elite of national artistic swimming.

The mixed children's duo formed by Victoria Romero and Miguel Martínez, with Sofía Méndez as a substitute, won a brilliant bronze medal. In the alevín category, the Lanzarote swimmers achieved a spectacular third place in the combo routine, climbing onto the podium together with prestigious clubs such as Sincro Retiro and Kallipolis. And in figures, the CD Pingüinos de Arrecife was classified in tenth position, qualifying for the First Division.

In the individual competition, the members of the CD Pingüinos de Arrecife also obtained outstanding results. Miguel Martínez was a bronze medalist in the men's figures, adding a new podium for the club during the weekend. Avril Bethencourt occupied the 18th position in the general classification and was fourth in her year (2014), Vega Jiménez occupied the 38th position and Mar Saavedra the 40th position in the general classification.

The CD Pingüinos de Arrecife counted in the alevín category with the participation of Avril Bethencourt Romero, Alba de Eusebio Fontes, Martyna Golawska Reguilón, Vega Jiménez Manzano, Carlota Martín Berreiro, Carla Martín Perera, Natalia Martínez Alayón, Eva Penichet Fernández, Mar Saavedra González, Bárbara Saenz Cabral, Alba Méndez López- Socas and Aitana Acuña. And in the children's category participated Lucio José Bethencourt Romero, Daniela Brito Espino, Eduardo Curbelo Plata, Dolores de León Delgado, Nora Díaz Molina, Lucía Martín Barreiro, Miguel Martínez Morales, Sofía Méndez López-Socas, Noa Nieto Marrero and Victoria Romero Martín.

At the conclusion of the Spanish Alevín and Infantil Winter Artistic Swimming Championship, the selection of swimmers who will be part of the national children's team was made. The CD Pingüinos de Arrecife is in luck with the invitation of Miguel Martínez, who will attend the next national concentration, recognizing his talent and projection.

It is the reward for the great work that has been done daily in training, placing the island of Lanzarote in the elite of national artistic swimming. A technical team led by Sylvia Hernández Mendizábal, with Alessandra Mauri, Ylenia Felipe and Arantxa Quesada at the foot of the pool and the collaboration of Nayara Peña. In addition, there is institutional support from the Cabildo de Lanzarote, the Art, Culture and Tourism Centers of Lanzarote, the Arrecife City Council, the Government of the Canary Islands, the Teguise City Council, the Lanzarote Foreign Promotion Society and collaborating companies.

The president of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife, Julio Romero, and the entire Board of Directors congratulate the CD Pingüinos de Arrecife for the results obtained in the Spanish Alevín and Infantil Winter Artistic Swimming Championship, positioning the island of Lanzarote in the elite of national artistic swimming.
