The San Ginés 2024 International High Seas Regatta, held this weekend, which had unbeatable conditions, took the start of the participating boats from the bay of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and arriving throughout Saturday to the waters of the bay of the capital of Lanzarote. The event, organized by the Royal Yacht Club of Arrecife, celebrated its 74th edition, and in which the "Buchaca", skippered by Joaquín Blanco of the Royal Yacht Club of Gran Canaria, was the winner.
The activities of the LXXIV San Ginés International High Seas Regatta began on the afternoon of last Thursday, with the registration procedure and the skippers' meeting that took place in the Salón Dámaso of the Royal Yacht Club of Gran Canaria. The start of the race took place at 5:00 p.m., and ahead the boats had to complete a journey of 115 nautical miles, the distance that separates the capitals of the islands of Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.
The race started with a wind of 16 knots and very little wave, and from the first moment the boats fought to get the best position. A first part of the regatta in which we had to regret the mishap suffered by the "Invictus", skippered by Unai Segurado and Miriam Arricivita, a boat whose mast broke 12 miles from the start and having to call Maritime Safety to proceed with its rescue.
The first boats arrived in the bay of Arrecife in the early hours of Saturday morning, although we had to wait to know the final classification until the entry of all the boats. Of the 19 boats that took the start on Friday afternoon in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, eleven were able to complete the 115 nautical miles of the route.
The "Buchaca", skippered by Joaquín Blanco and from the Royal Yacht Club of Gran Canaria, scores an absolute victory in the LXXIV San Ginés International High Seas Regatta. The podium is completed with the second position of the "Muyay", skippered by Aureliano Negrín of the Royal Yacht Club of Arrecife, and the third place of the "Rogue Wave", skippered by José Ignacio Cantero of the Royal Yacht Club of Gran Canaria.
Regarding the classification by categories, in the ORC 1-2 class the triumph was for the "Muyay" of Aureliano Negrín, being one of the most awarded boats in the oldest high seas regatta in Spain. In the ORC 3 class, the "Rogue Wave" of José Ignacio Cantero scored the victory. And in the ORC 4-5 class the "Buchaca" of Joaquín Blanco took the triumph and was the class that had the largest number of participants.
The culmination of the LXXIV San Ginés International High Seas Regatta was on Saturday night with the awards ceremony, events that took place at the facilities of the Royal Yacht Club of Arrecife and in which all participants were treated to a dinner.
The LXXIV San Ginés International Regatta has been organized by the Royal Yacht Club of Arrecife in collaboration with the Royal Yacht Club of Gran Canaria and Calero Marinas SL, by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation and the Royal Canary Sailing Federation, with the support of Naviera Armas – Trasmediterránea, Gran Hotel Arrecife, CICAR, Renault Lanzarote – Juan Toledo SL, Decathlon and Bodegas Erupción, and the institutional collaboration of the Arrecife City Council, the Arrecife Department of Sports, the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo de Lanzarote, the Department of Sports of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, the Tourism Department of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, the European Sport Destination and Promotur.
