The Councilor for the Elderly of the Arrecife City Council, Rosmen Quevedo, congratulates the teams from the Lanzarote capital that have achieved outstanding results in the final day of the XXIV Wooden Canary Ball Tournament ‘Abuelos Conejeros’, held this Saturday on the courts adjacent to the Arrecife Civic Center.
The councilor, who has been accompanied each Wednesday throughout the tournament on each day by the deputy mayor, Echedey Eugenio, has wanted to extend this recognition to all Arrecife participants and to all the teams from Lanzarote that have been part of a competition that, in addition to its sporting nature, is an example of active aging, coexistence, and preservation of Canarian traditions.
The great women's final had a marked Arrecife protagonism. The Altavista team won the championship title, made up of (Margarita, Carmen, Benedicta, Lolina, Catalina, and Irene), while Las Atrevidas achieved the runner-up position with a team formed by (Loli, María Ángeles, Reyes, and Carmen).
According to the Arrecife City Council, in the men's category, the San Francisco Javier team achieved a meritorious third position thanks to the participation of (Gonzalo, Tomás, Terio, Domingo, and Andrés).
Quevedo has highlighted that “these results are a source of pride for all of Arrecife and a great motivation for all our elders, who participate in each edition, and who once again have shown that sport continues to be a fundamental tool for staying active”.
He also recalled that “canary ball is part of our cultural and sporting heritage, and it is the responsibility of institutions to continue supporting these types of initiatives that keep our traditions alive”.
The tournament, organized for another year by the Cabildo de Lanzarote in collaboration with the seven city councils, brought together nearly 900 players over 60 years of age from the seven municipalities of Lanzarote in this edition, consolidating itself once again as one of the main island events for the promotion of traditional sport and the participation of the elderly.
