Arrecife becomes an international nautical capital with two major regattas in August

The Royal Yacht Club will organize the historic San Ginés Regatta, which celebrates its 75th edition, and the Arrecife–Agadir Regatta, uniting sport and twinning between the Canary Islands and Morocco

The Royal Yacht Club of Arrecife will be the organizer of two major international regattas in August. From the 7th to the 9th, the traditional International San Ginés Regatta 2025 will arrive, the oldest held in the Canary Islands and which has been held since 1947. Another of the great events of the summer season will be the Arrecife – Agadir International Regatta, with 220 nautical miles and an event that has become a twinning between the two cities. 

The official presentation of the LXXV International San Ginés Regatta and IX International Arrecife – Agadir Regatta took place on Friday afternoon. The president of the Royal Yacht Club of Arrecife, Julio Romero, was accompanied by the Minister of Sports of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Juan Monzón, and Roberto Herbón, representing the Arrecife City Council. In addition, Ahmed Benovadden, president of the Yacht Club D´Agadir, and Khalil Hassouna, representative of the Regional Government of Agadir, among others, were present. 

Julio Romero explained that the International San Ginés Regatta “has a special characteristic this year, we are celebrating the 75th edition”, and recalled that “it is the oldest high seas regatta in the Canary Islands and one of the toughest in the entire circuit”. A test that takes place from August 7 to 9, with departure from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and arrival in Arrecife. 

The Minister of Sports of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Juan Monzón, pointed out that “it is a true pleasure and a commitment acquired to collaborate so that the regattas can be held year after year”, and recalled that two years ago he had the opportunity to welcome the boats that completed the crossing between Arrecife and Agadir. 

For his part, Roberto Herbón wished “good sea to all and may the winds be favorable for all participants”. In addition, he acquired the commitment to be able to participate in one of the regattas in the future, when his political responsibilities allow it, and added that “it is a pleasure to sail through the Atlantic Ocean”. 

 

IX Arrecife – Agadir International Regatta

After the celebration of the LXXV International San Ginés Regatta, the XIV César Manrique RCNA – Calero Marinas Trophy will arrive in mid-August, and then the IX Arrecife – Agadir International Regatta, which takes place from August 19 to 23, and in which the participating boats must complete a route of 220 nautical miles. 

Ahmed Benovadden, president of the Yacht Club D´Agadir, considered that “it is a regatta that facilitates the twinning between two cities through sport”, and announced that all participants will be entertained upon arrival and will be able to enjoy an excursion. For his part, Khalil Hassouna, representative of the Regional Government of Agadir, commented that “he hopes that the regatta will live up to expectations and we will receive all participants with open arms”.
