The VII edition of the Yaiza Extremo Sur MTB has been held this weekend, once again surprising both local cyclists and those who arrived from other islands. The spectacular landscapes of southern Lanzarote have once again become the main attraction of a competition that continues to consolidate itself in the mountain biking calendar and offers routes adapted to different levels of preparation and experience.
The competition kicked off on Friday afternoon with the youngest participants taking center stage, who competed in the different MTB school events, which counted towards the inter-island competition. The young cyclists had the opportunity to demonstrate their skill on two wheels under the watchful eyes of family and friends, on a day marked by enthusiasm, camaraderie, and the desire to enjoy the sport. A youth category that made it clear that mountain biking has a promising future in Lanzarote.
Saturday brought the main event of this seventh edition with the celebration of the two distances for adults, 60 and 30 kilometers, both with start and finish in the vicinity of the THB Tropical Island Hotel, which became the nerve center of the competition throughout the weekend.
The day dawned with splendid conditions for mountain biking, allowing participants to fully enjoy the spectacular landscapes of the south of the island, traversing trails, tracks, and paths that tested their endurance, skill, and physical preparation. A privileged environment that once again became one of the main protagonists of the Yaiza Extremo Sur.
Antonio Padrón wins the 60 kilometers
The first to start were the participants of the main distance, the 60 kilometers, who began their adventure at 08:00 hours. Ahead of them was a demanding route in which they had to combine endurance, technique, and good effort management to overcome the different sections of the circuit.
Antonio Padrón from Fuerteventura, from the Velosa team, was the fastest to complete the route, crossing the finish line with a time of 2 hours, 31 minutes, and 36 seconds. The second position went to César Vera, also from Velosa, with 2:36:48, while Moisés Cava, from the A Más Viento Más Cadena team, completed the men's podium with 2:36:51.
In the women's classification, Yurena Alonso, from Velosa, took the victory with a time of 3:23:08, followed by Patricia Herrera, who finished in 3:31:47, and Rachel Connerney, third with 3:55:40.
After crossing the finish line, Antonio Padrón did not skimp on praise for the route and the organization of the event. The cyclist from Fuerteventura highlighted that it is always a pleasure to return to the Yaiza Extremo Sur and particularly valued the inclusion of some technical trails, which added another point of difficulty and attraction to the course. A combination that, in his opinion, allows one to enjoy the landscapes of the municipality without giving up the sporting challenge typical of a competition of this nature.
Carlos Afonso conquers the 30 kilometers in his first participation
One hour later, at 09:00, it was the turn of the participants in the 30-kilometer distance, who were impatiently waiting for the moment to start the competition. Fewer kilometers ahead, but the same desire, enthusiasm, and intensity to face a route that also offered numerous sporting and scenic attractions.
The men's victory went to Carlos Afonso, from Harquo, who completed the 30 kilometers in 1 hour, 19 minutes, and 21 seconds. The second place went to Javier Díaz, from Irichen, with 1:19:51, while Gabriel Pérez, from CD El Aljibe, occupied the third step of the podium with a time of 1:21:08.
In the women's category, Simone Aparecida, from Triyaiza, was the winner with a time of 2:02:37, ahead of Rosi Ignarro, second with 2:22:10, and Carmen Santana, who closed the podium with 2:27:09.
Carlos Afonso, who had traveled from La Palma to participate for the first time in the Yaiza Extremo Sur, was especially satisfied. The winner acknowledged that he had received very good references about the circuit and that the experience had fully met his expectations.
The cyclist from La Palma assured that he did not regret having traveled to Lanzarote and that he was leaving with very positive feelings. Furthermore, he left the door open to returning in the next edition: "If I can, next year I will repeat this good experience that I am taking away."
The Councilor for Sports of the Yaiza City Council, Ángel Lago, who followed the development of the competition, highly valued the balance of this seventh edition: "We are very satisfied with the result of the event, both from an organizational and sporting point of view. It was a success to bring the start and finish to Playa Blanca and the participants have told us that they are delighted with the circuits and the landscapes they traverse, which encourages us to continue working to consolidate a competition that already has its place in the calendar of mountain biking in the Canary Islands."
The awards ceremony marked the grand finale of the VII Yaiza Extremo Sur MTB
Once all participants had finished, the traditional awards ceremony took place, attended by the Councilor for Sports of Yaiza, Ángel Lago, and representatives of the Hotel THB Tropical Island and the event organization.
The event served to recognize the effort and results of the most outstanding cyclists in the different categories, but also, being the last event of the Lanzarote-Fuerteventura Inter-island Cup 2026, it also allowed the Canary Islands Cycling Federation to present the trophies and jerseys corresponding to the Cup winners.
Organized by the Yaiza City Council and Cronoline Eventos, with the collaboration of Turismo Lanzarote and the Centers of Art, Culture and Tourism of Lanzarote (CACT), the Yaiza Extremo Sur MTB successfully concludes its seventh edition, meeting the expectations of mountain biking enthusiasts from different parts of the Canary Islands and consolidating itself as a prominent event on the island's sports calendar.
The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, thanks "the work of all the people involved in the organization, as well as the collaboration of the security and emergency services" and reaffirms the City Council's commitment to the combination of sport and tourism. "These competitions attract athletes and companions who get to know our landscapes, enjoy our tourist offerings, and generate activity in the establishments of Playa Blanca and the entire Yaiza municipality. We will continue to support events that contribute to promoting our destination and strengthening the municipality's economy," emphasizes the southern leader.
