Cl Tao took the title in the senior category, while CL Unión Norte won in the youth category

Reopening of the "Heraclio Niz" wrestling arena

The wrestling ground of the Sports City now has the nomenclature of Heraclio Niz, “Pollo de Arrecife”, thus complying with the plenary agreement and also recovering the space that had been buried by the previous government.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, accompanied by the vice-counselor of Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Sabroso; the mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León; the vice president of the Cabildo, Jacobo Medina, and the island's Sports counselor, Juan Monzón, unveiled the commemorative plaque together with the wife and children of Heraclio Niz.

Betancort assured that it has been a joy to “see so many people enjoying our vernacular sport”. “We achieved the objective. Congratulations to all the clubs on the Island, because as the good friend Piti says, today the winner is the Canarian Wrestling, and the times when our traditions were covered in cement are behind us”.

The Sports counselor, for his part, valued the work of the workers of the Island Sports Service, as well as the Public Works area led by the vice president Jacobo Medina, for making this reopening possible. “It has been an emotional day for the family of Heraclio Niz and for lovers of vernacular sport. We recovered a space that we should never have lost, Canarian wrestling has returned to the Lanzarote Sports City never to leave”, added Monzón.

The act of recognition to Heraclio Niz was held after the celebration of the youth final, which saw CL Unión Norte win against CL Unión Sur Tías (12-11). In it, the president of the Cabildo, accompanied by the vice president, the Sports counselor and the mayor of Arrecife, among other political leaders, as well as the president of the Canarian Wrestling Federation in Lanzarote, accompanied the family of Heraclio Niz to inaugurate the commemorative plaque that gives the island's wrestling ground the name Heraclio Niz, “Pollo de Arrecife”.

Likewise, the family members were given a series of commemorative details of the event, as well as bouquets of flowers and a replica of the plaque installed at the entrance of the wrestling ground.

Once the emotional act was over, the final of the senior category began, and it was CL Tao who won the title against CL Unión Norte, with Paquito Reyes being in charge of knocking down Ángel García from the northern team twice in the last instance.
