The first edition of the Nu-Tri-Cross has exceeded all the expectations of the organizers and less than a week before the closing of registrations, 120 triathletes have already confirmed their participation in the cross triathlon on February 1. A sporting event that will take place entirely in the tourist town of Puerto del Carmen and will serve to recover a sports modality that had not been held on the island of Lanzarote for several years. An event that will have a course of 750 meters swimming, 20 kilometers of mountain biking and 5 kilometers of running.
The official presentation of the first edition of the Nu-Tri-Cross took place on Wednesday afternoon at the Vino+ Lanzarote Restaurant, located in the Playa Blanca Shopping Center in Puerto del Carmen. Miguel Ángel Duque, sports director of the event, was accompanied by Francisco Aparicio, Councilor for Sports of the Tías City Council, Mame Fernández, Deputy Mayor of Tías and Councilor for Tourism, and the Lanzarote triathlete Fernando Rodríguez. Also present at the press conference were representatives of the sponsors and collaborators of the Nu-Tri-Cross.
The Councilor for Tourism of the Tías City Council, Mame Fernández, stated that it is "a pride that the Nu-Tri-Cross is held in Puerto del Carmen" and was delighted that the tourist town "hosts an event that will be an incentive for tourists to see a different sports show". For his part, Francisco Aparicio, Councilor for Sports of the Tías City Council, wanted to thank the organizers for the work they are doing to organize a cross triathlon of these characteristics and wished that it be "very participatory, to the liking of everyone and that it be included within the wide sports offer that the municipality of Tías has".
The triathlete Fernando Rodríguez has been one of those who have collaborated in the preparation of the Nu-Tri-Cross course and guaranteed that on February 1 the participants will find a "very fun circuit". Fernando recalled that the event is "a commitment to cross triathlon", a sports modality that had disappeared from the island of Lanzarote. The last cross triathlon was held two years ago and was valid for the Canary Islands Championship.
Miguel Ángel Duque, sports director of the Nu-Tri-Cross, was in charge of explaining the course that the event will have on February 1. The swimming segment will take place on Los Pocillos beach, starting next to the Los Jameos hotel and ending in the area near Plaza de Las Naciones, where the transition will be located. The mountain biking part will take place in areas near the golf course and the treatment plant, with Miguel Ángel Duque pointing out that "the first 10-12 kilometers are very technical for those who want to do the event quickly". And the running race will consist of two laps of 2.5 kilometers, with the first lap entirely on asphalt and the second combining a stretch on the sand of the beach and the asphalt.
The sports director of the Nu-Tri-Cross advanced that this first edition is being a success at the participatory level, exceeding the initial expectations of the organizers. Currently there are 85 triathletes registered in the individual category and 12 teams, making a total of 120 participants. Registration closes on Tuesday, January 27 at 13:00 hours. Miguel Ángel Duque highlighted the participation in the professional field of triathletes of the stature of Víctor del Corral or Stephen Bayliss. At the island level, triathletes such as Fernando Rodríguez or Alexei Perdomo will be on the starting line in the men's category and Sara Camacho or Isabel Quevedo in the women's category.
The first edition of the Nu-Tri-Cross will start at 10:00 am on Sunday, February 1, with the celebration of different races for the little ones planned. Races with a route adapted to each of the age groups and that will start approximately at 1:00 pm, when all the participants of the cross triathlon have reached the finish line. And when the children's races conclude, the awards ceremony of the Nu-Tri-Cross will take place.
