Why is it that on all the islands of the Archipelago, they do not speak in the same way?

In general terms, the way of speaking throughout the Archipelago presents great homogeneity. The fundamental features of the variety (seseo, consonantal relaxation, absence of the pronoun vosotros, frequent use of the diminutive, etc.) are common to the majority of speakers in the Archipelago.

However, there are some peculiar features in island dialects that derive from historical or social aspects (population groups, migratory currents, contact with other societies), which have left their mark mainly on the lexical level. Thus, the speech of La Palma highlights the presence of Portuguese and Americanisms, while in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, Arabisms that are not used on other islands are recorded. In phonetics, the realization of /-s/ at the end of a syllable or word is the aspect that presents the greatest variety among the Islands, ranging from the sibilant realization of Hierro speakers to the assimilated and tense pronunciation that, in certain phonetic contexts, characterizes Gran Canarian speech. At the grammatical level, the use of vosotros in La Gomera (also recorded in parts of other islands) distinguishes the speech of the "colombina" island. There are also specific uses in rural speech, as opposed to urban speech. These and other peculiarities are integrated without difficulty into the general features that characterize the use of the Canarian variety in the Archipelago.
