Promote science with equality: bet on all minds to build the future

Every February 11th we commemorate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a date that invites not only to celebrate the advances achieved, but also to reflect on the challenges that still persist on the path towards a more just, inclusive, and representative science

Gender equality in the scientific field is not a secondary issue. It is an essential element for the social, economic, and technological development of our country. The Government of Spain, from a progressive vision committed to the rights and opportunities of all people, understands that talent cannot be wasted for gender reasonsDespite the advances achieved in recent years, the data continue to show an unequal reality. Women continue to be underrepresented in many scientific disciplines, especially in STEM areas—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—. Furthermore, their presence in leadership and decision-making positions in research centers remains limited

These inequalities do not respond to a lack of capacity, but rather to structural barriers, persistent stereotypes, and difficulties in reconciling personal and professional life. Overcoming them is a collective responsibility that demands firm public policies and active involvement from all of society

From public administrations, we must continue promoting measures that guarantee real equality of opportunities. Educational programs that foster scientific vocations from an early age, specific scholarships, work-life balance plans, mentoring networks, and the visibility of female role models are fundamental tools for advancing this objective.

Investing in equality is investing in excellence. Numerous studies show that diverse teams generate better results, drive innovation, and provide more effective solutions to the great challenges of our time, such as climate change, the energy transition, or digital transformationIn this regard, Lanzarote and the Canary Islands have enormous potential in areas such as sustainability, environmental research, renewable energies, or the protection of natural heritage. Promoting the participation of women and girls in these strategic sectors not only strengthens our scientific fabric, but also contributes to building a fairer and more balanced development modelThe International Day of Women and Girls in Science must therefore be a day to reaffirm commitments and renew efforts. From the General Administration of the State in Lanzarote, we will continue working with educational centers, universities, social entities, and companies to consolidate a scientific culture based on equality, respect, and inclusion.

Because a science that excludes is an incomplete science. And because only by adding all the perspectives, all the talent, and all the capabilities will we be able to build a more prosperous, sustainable, and democratic future for our land and for our country
