Dear Mayor, I am writing this open letter to request that El Reducto beach stop being an unsympathetic beach for our elders and other people with mobility problems.
Our beach is a delight when it is close to high tide, as thanks to its natural defenses it becomes a large public pool for the enjoyment of all residents and our beloved tourists. However, when the tide goes out, bathing becomes a very dangerous activity for the elderly and those who unfortunately find their mobility reduced.
The other day, accompanying my almost nonagenarian father in the bath when the tide was at mid-height, I realized that there were several elderly people who were having difficulty entering or leaving the sea, because of how stony the beach is when it is far from high tide time.
At that moment it occurred to me that one of these two solutions could be taken. Either a wide and paved access under the water that allows our elders to access the part where there are no stones and where bathing becomes comfortable, or directly extract all those stones so that our beach has a sandy bottom that does not hinder the entry and exit of bathers.
As I fear that many people will want to oppose my proposal because the measure would mean "altering the natural environment", I would like to point out that El Reducto beach is essentially an artificial beach, which was originally a stony ground with some tongues of sand here and there and that on several occasions has been answered with sand until reaching the current artificial state.
Since it is an artificial beach created over decades, why not make a better artificial beach that is in solidarity with all the residents of the city? In addition, the objective of our small city should be to have the best urban beach in Spain, better than, for example, Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (easy objective to achieve) or even La Concha beach in San Sebastian.
In any case, I hope this letter will serve as a reflection on this matter.
