Las Grietas: the new photocall to ruin Lanzarote

Oh, Las Grietas... that geological jewel that took thousands of years to form and now takes just a couple of stories to deteriorate. Because, of course, what does conservation matter when you can take a divine photo for Instagram?

The scene is award-winning: long lines of tourists with outfits planned for the photo, shoes ideal for crushing the rock, and the technique of "lean well on the wall, it's not going to fall... or is it?". All very National Geographic, but version "me first, nature later".

And the best thing is that nobody says anything here. No signs, no surveillance, not a miserable voice saying "hey, better not go up there". Because, of course, setting rules scares tourists away and that is unforgivable. Better to let the island wear out, so we have the perfect excuse for more campaigns of "let's save what we have already let destroy".

Then the collective weeping will come: "What a shame that Las Grietas no longer exist as before...". But it doesn't matter, we can always queue for the next destructive fad. The island is big, we will surely find another corner to crush.

In short, if the goal was to turn Lanzarote into a theme park without rules, we are doing great. The problem is that when we run out of scenery, not even the best Instagram filter will save us from shame.
