Clavijo is too small for the Canary Islands

One of two, either hysteria unbecoming of a president of the Canary Islands, or a miserable electoral calculation, equally unbecoming although not for that reason unaccustomed.

The overacting of Fernando Clavijo with respect to the arrival in the Canary Islands of the MV Hondius supposes, in addition to a terrible ridicule, a lamentable exhibition of cheap populism and the absolute lack of human and political stature.

According to Clavijo, the Canary Islands are incapable of managing a situation with guarantees that, however surprising it may be to us, could happen again at any time, without the cruise ship needing to come from Argentina via Cape Verde.

With his foolish reasoning, Clavijo has insisted on portraying a Canary Islands incapable of facing its responsibilities, perhaps because it is the hallmark of his government.

Responsibilities that in this case, moreover, are minimal, not to say nonexistent, since the management of the crisis corresponds to the Government of Spain. The president of the Canary Islands would only have to offer his loyal collaboration.

But no. What Clavijo has offered have been alarmist statements, as if the cruise passengers were going to be taken off the ship to be walked down Avenida de Anaga to a reception at the Presidency.

Statements made relying, and it is a trademark of the house, on the defense of the Canary Islands when the defense of the islands regarding public health corresponds to the Government of Spain, while he forgets with great frequency what are indeed his responsibilities.

But of course, it was impossible for him to resist a new minute of glory and a new exhibition of grievances. He needed to show with Sánchez the firmness that he does not dare to exhibit with his popular partners when they turn their back on him with the minors.

The bad thing for Clavijo is that this crisis will not last very long. When the planes with the last passengers from the cruise leave on Sunday, the crisis will be over.

What will remain in memory will be the image of a president, either hysterical or opportunistic, trying to make the Canary Islands as small as he is.
