The Yaiza City Council confirms its intention to intervene in the facade of the cemetery in the town of Femés to seek "a satisfactory accessibility solution, with the consensus of the Church, owner of the cemetery, and the Heritage service of the Cabildo of Lanzarote".
The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, the parish priest of the municipality and archpriest of Lanzarote, Jonathan Almeida, the Heritage technician of the Cabildo, and the architect hired by Yaiza to draft the project visited the site of the action this Tuesday.
Óscar Noda reports that "we commissioned a project to eliminate architectural barriers while respecting the singularities of an old building and also another solution to remedy the dampness of the historic church".
In the cemetery, the proposal is aimed at building a ramp on the left side of the facade, considering the location of the current planter and the alignment of the plot adjacent to the cemetery. "It is a delicate intervention due to the heritage value of the cemetery, but we believe it is viable as we are going to present it in the project," adds the mayor.
Regarding the church, the objective is to carry out work to solve the dampness problems of the building. The drainage system of the roof and the garden area on one of the sides are the origin of the problem in the temple. The solution requires more time, but technicians are already considering viable alternatives. Yaiza is confident in obtaining all the permits to act in both locations.
