The message “Thank you for depositing waste inside your container” is heard in some container areas in the municipality of Yaiza with the aim of raising awareness and sensitizing the population about the importance of depositing waste in the specific container for each type of waste, organic, cardboard and paper, glass, and plastic. Furthermore, it is reminded that it is prohibited to leave garbage outside the containers, a bad practice that in Yaiza carries sanctions of up to 3,000 euros, according to the Citizen Coexistence Ordinance of the southern municipality.

The City Council, presided over by Óscar Noda, implemented this pilot and pioneering project in the Canary Islands three months ago, and the first results are beginning to be noticed in the most problematic areas where unscrupulous individuals usually dump waste outside the containers, which even impede or hinder the free movement of pedestrians on sidewalks. “We want to convey a positive message to improve recycling habits and deter uncivil behaviors that we unfortunately continue to detect,” points out the mayor.

Óscar Noda maintains that “it is a responsibility of all of us, of us as the Administration, who, of course, must provide the resources and means for a proper cleaning service, and we are taking measures for it, and of the citizens who must also respect their community and environment.”

The Councilor for Cleaning of Yaiza, Rubén Arca, explains that “the system has integrated cameras with the same objective of combating the lack of civility. Our purpose is to expand the installation of the system in other parts of the municipality that are subject to technical study.” At night, the audio system is disconnected, but a light is activated that illuminates when a person approaches the container location.

In terms of cleaning improvements, Yaiza is already evaluating the five offers from companies bidding for the new contract for the provision of the new waste collection service. The City Council proposes the signing of a 10-year contract estimated at 36 million euros. The service includes the collection of organic waste, residual fraction, domestic oil, belongings, electrical appliances, pruning, and the installation of mobile clean points.
