The government of Yaiza approved this Thursday in plenary session the motion from the CC group requesting the drafting of a project to improve access to the crown of the Volcán Montaña Roja, in Playa Blanca. However, the mayor expressly asked that it be reflected in the minutes that the Cabildo of Lanzarote, governed by CC and PP, formally assumes the commitment to finance the integral project of the municipality, called ‘Yaiza, senderos de jable y sal’. An initiative aimed at conditioning and signaling the southern network of trails, 215 kilometers long, also incorporating two sea swimming circuits, one in Puerto Calero and another in Playa Blanca.
“From the very beginning of the term, when I presented the project with the Councilor for Sports, Ángel Lago, the president of the Cabildo assured that there was money for its execution, but we are still waiting for more action and fewer words, because those are carried away by the wind,” states the mayor.
Óscar Noda summarizes the position of Unidos por Yaiza by pointing out that “what we are asking for in the plenary session is for the CC Yaiza group to convince their colleagues in the Cabildo that we need to be ambitious and bet not only on one route, but on a global project for the conditioning of our trails, like the one we already have drafted with its technical specifications.”
Among the main actions of ‘Yaiza, senderos de jable y sal’ is the design of routes that run through the municipality and allow for the recovery of the functionality of the old public roads that cross it. The project can be executed in phases and in 2022 it had an average budget of two thousand euros for each kilometer conditioned, in addition to the consideration of a budget item for the maintenance of the network, which is one of Yaiza’s main concerns.
Thirty-six routes
The project includes 36 routes that connect different branches to facilitate users building their own routes by joining sections. The Yaiza trail network is configured in four basic categories: a route along the coastline perimeter, a series of long routes that structure the municipality connecting the main urban centers and areas of interest, a third level of secondary trails intended for connectivity between the previous two categories, and other isolated trails that are not connected to any other area of the municipality. This last category is relevant in the El Golfo, Montaña Roja, and La Geria areas.
