The Yaiza City Council has extended by four years the deadline to build a new five-star hotel with about 700 beds in Playa Blanca, in the south of Lanzarote, at the request of the developer.

The project, promoted by the company Explotaciones e Inversiones Timanfaya SL, contemplates creating a hotel accommodation of 342 lodging units and 684 places and was provisionally authorized and classified by the current Government group of the Cabildo de Lanzarote in April 2024.

A year earlier, with the previous Executive, the authorization of the project and its provisional classification had already been resolved favorably, but its authorization was not taken to the Island Government Council then and remained pending that procedure.

While the Cabildo granted the tourist license, the building permit was granted by the council a year ago, according to sources from the Yaiza City Council. After obtaining the green light, the company requested the return of the Tax on Constructions, Installations and Works (ICIO) because they did not plan to start building. However, they have recently requested a four-year extension to be able to build this hotel complex, although they have not yet started work.

Near the largest hotel on the island

The land on which this hotel is to be built is part of the old partial plan of Playa Blanca, in the AB1 H2 Plot of Costa Papagayo, within the General Plan of Yaiza, which has been totally annulled by the Supreme Court.

The land has an area of 41,906 square meters, of which 25,373 are buildable and is located near the largest hotel in Lanzarote, which opened at the end of 2023, in the midst of demonstrations demanding tourist degrowth on the island.

The company Explotaciones e Inversiones Timanfaya SL is a real estate development company, with fiscal headquarters in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Gran Canaria. This company was incorporated in January 2020. Municipal sources report that the developer is obliged to do sanitation works and a road in the area.

In January 2023, the businessman José Ramón Olaverría Ulacia, as president of Inversiones Timanfaya, authorized the architect Agustín Díaz Aguilar Cantero to process "any document" necessary to obtain the Provisional Classification.

On that same date, the attorney communicated the start of activity of the tourist accommodation and requested from the Yaiza City Council the prior "and mandatory" municipal report on the suitability of the activity.
