The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, reviewed this Wednesday at a press conference the main lines of the 2026 budget, estimated at 33.7 million euros, which he will submit for debate and approval by the municipal plenary session to be held this Friday, May 29. Thus, the council explained that in this extraordinary session it will also report on the incorporation of 22.9 million euros in treasury surplus that the City Council will allocate to new public infrastructures and the completion of others that are already in the execution phase.

70,000 euros for home care and 30,000 for the Co-responsibility Plan

Óscar Noda highlighted the municipal accounts for “their strong social focus,” referring to the home care service for the elderly and dependent, which the Administration will strengthen with a tender of 70,000 euros.

In this regard, the mayor stated that “the population is growing, there is greater demand for care, and municipal staff are being overwhelmed, so this is a measure to optimize the coverage of an essential service that Social Services staff have been providing with total professionalism.”

The budget also foresees 30,000 euros to guarantee the continuity of the Co-responsibility Plan throughout the year, a project aimed at children aged six to twelve in situations of social vulnerability. Its objective is to promote work-life balance, while supporting the educational, emotional, and social development of minors. Yaiza also increases the allocation for charitable and welfare assistance from 170,000 to 200,000 euros.

2.8 million for the garbage collection service

On the other hand, the municipal accounts reflect the increase in cultural programming and promotion, with events such as Yaiza Naturaleza Sonora, the Traslación Dance Festival, support for training in performing arts, or subsidies to municipal cultural groups. The council announces more investment for the Sports Schools program, which increases from 130,000 euros to 180,000 euros.

In terms of expenses, Yaiza reserves 2.8 million euros for the garbage collection service and one million euros more for the privatization of the cleaning and maintenance service for the municipality's garden areas, in addition to 650,000 euros for the cleaning and maintenance of educational centers.

In the primary sector, the budget includes new subsidies for the Association of Artisan Cheese Factories of Lanzarote (Aqual) and the Fishermen's Guild of Playa Blanca. In Tourism, there is also a reserve for tourist promotion and the organization of revitalizing events. University students in the municipality will also see their transport aid increased; for example, young people pursuing in-person studies outside the Island will now receive 1,200 euros instead of the 900 euros they were previously receiving.

Surplus for works and the state of the Playa Blanca pavilion

Yaiza has works underway for more than 10 million euros, mostly in Playa Blanca and Uga, but the Administration will use a large part of its 22.9 million euros in net savings for new infrastructure and the completion of other projects of general interest. The City Council has drafted and approved the construction project for the new Playa Blanca Library near CEO Montaña Roja and is finalizing the drafting of the interactive museum content project for the Casa del Camello in Uga, totaling a provision of 4 million euros for both projects.

After completing all legal steps, Yaiza managed to terminate the contract with the company awarded the Playa Blanca Sports Pavilion, which, upon entering bankruptcy proceedings, left the facility half-finished. Therefore, it is now preparing to tender the pending works to finalize its execution. The City Council has in its possession the technical report describing the needs to be met and improvements to the project it has decided to incorporate, as well as the mandate for the completion of the Playa Blanca football field. There is a provision of 7 million euros for the two sports facilities.

Another important action is the rehabilitation of roads in the central area of Playa Blanca, the oldest part of the town. This action involves accessibility works and new parking spaces, in addition to those currently being built behind the church of El Carmen.

“Today other so many actions, but the important thing is that we have designed a balanced budget that covers the priority demands of the municipality considering citizen participation. We already have 20,000 inhabitants and the services and infrastructures have to respond to our population, which also fulfills its obligations,” notes Óscar Noda. The mayor explained the budget to the political groups in the informative commission and reported on it to the unions as appropriate before the plenary session.
