The far-right political party Vox has presented a non-binding proposal in the Parliament of the Canary Islands to promote the prohibition of using the niqab or burqa in the archipelago "for being a foreign custom incompatible with Western civilization".

The opposition party has thus urged the regional Parliament to "ban the full veil" throughout the Canary Islands. Furthermore, it has announced that this initiative will be presented in the rest of the country's institutions for "the protection of women's dignity and public safety".

Thus, the far-right party has insisted on associating the use of the burqa in Spain with "open border policies" and "the importation of foreign customs"In addition, he has asked the Canary Islands Parliament to submit to the Congress of Deputies the modification of two organic laws to prohibit this clothing "which does not correspond to Spanish culture."In this regard, the party chaired by Santiago Abascal has insisted that "the rule of law and the protection of the common good" of the West is "threatened by the imposition of Islamist customs in the Spanish public space." To which it has added that accepting the use of the burqa "would mean admitting as current a custom that is simply incompatible with the way of life of our civilization."

Vox added that other European countries such as France, in 2010, Belgium, in 2011, Austria, in 2017, Denmark, in 2018, the Netherlands, in 2019, and Switzerland, in 2021, have publicly debated restricting the public use of these garments.

Finally, he insisted that there is an "imposition of Islamist ideology, characterized by intolerance towards other beliefs and customs." To which he added that "Canarian society cannot accept that, under the guise of an alien and hostile ideology," there is an "attempt to eliminate the identity of women from social life."
