The CEO of the Centers for Art, Culture and Tourism, Ángel Vázquez (Partido Popular), has responded to the accusations made by Unidos por Lanzarote who accused him of having used the Centers' money to pay for the patron saint festivals in his hometown in Galicia.
Vázquez has valued “very positively” the presence of the Lanzarote delegation at the 64th Festa do pulpo of O Carballiño. “It is a massive event that brings together people from different parts of the world eager to experience and celebrate a product with a deep connection to the maritime life of Lanzarote," the counselor defended. "On a personal level, it is a source of pride to have been able to be present at this gastronomic twinning between my land of birth and my adopted land,” he added.
In response to criticism from Laureano Álvarez (UPL), who stated that if Vázquez "had not been born in O Carballiño, the Centers would never have invested a single euro in promoting the festivals of that municipality," Vázquez insisted that Lanzarote's presence "as guest of honor in this edition allowed for the strengthening of ties between Galicia and the Canary Islands through gastronomy, culture, and the historical relationships arising from emigration."
“The name of the island has been recurrent throughout the event, Lanzarote has been heard at all hours and in all corners," he added. "In fact, commemorative t-shirts have even been printed with images and photographs of landscapes, graphics, and phrases related to Lanzarote,” he indicated.
A stall with gastronomic products
The Centers for Art, Culture and Tourism have had a stall where a small sample of the island's gastronomic heritage has been served. “The island's contribution to this event has consisted of five boxes of wine, six kilos of cheese, and another six kilos of potatoes, all from Lanzarote, so that people can get to know and enjoy a very special part of what distinguishes us around a table.”
“Rigor and clarity”
The counselor of the Entity has wanted to clarify that "Lanzarote's economic contribution to the event has been zero euros". For this reason, he has criticized those who "intend to take advantage of any circumstance to have their minute of glory in the media and try to scratch a handful of votes. Politics requires rigor and clarity, not the saying of they say they said or they tell me they told".
Along these lines, he recalled that the Centers for Art, Culture and Tourism have just signed agreements with the town councils that allocate 306,878 euros to cultural, sports and social activities in the seven municipalities of Lanzarote.
In the same way, he pointed out that the Entity allocated 4.74 million euros in 2025 to the implementation of 138 social, sports and cultural projects in Lanzarote and La Graciosa through its Corporate Social Responsibility.
