ANPE Canarias demands that the central government guarantee the possibility of voluntary retirement at 60 years of age with 30 years of service for all public education teachers, regardless of their contribution scheme. At the same time, it calls on the Ministry of Education of the Canary Islands Government for an effective reduction in direct teaching hours for teachers over 55 years of age, without a decrease in their remuneration.
The union warns that "the aging of staff, the growing complexity of classrooms, daily student attention, and the increase in bureaucratic tasks make it necessary to recognize the physical and emotional wear and tear accumulated after decades of professional practice."
Currently, voluntary retirement at 60 years of age with 30 years of service is provided for, in general, civil servants belonging to the Passive Classes Regime, which was joined by career civil servants who entered before January 1, 2011. Teachers who entered later and interim teachers are enrolled in the General Social Security Regime and do not have the same retirement option. Therefore, it demands that all teachers be able to avail themselves of this right.
ANPE Canarias calls on the Ministry of Education for a real reduction in teaching hours for teachers over 55 years of age
ANPE Canarias insists that "the improvement of conditions for older teachers cannot be subject to a state reform." Therefore, it calls on the Ministry of Education for "a reduction in teaching hours for teachers over 55 years of age, which would allow for a decrease in the weekly time of direct student attention in classrooms and the allocation of those hours to other teaching functions, such as lesson preparation, pedagogical coordination, or the creation of educational materials, without reducing the working day or remuneration."
This demand has precedents. In September 2024, ANPE Canarias reported the difficulties in applying the hourly reduction to teachers over 59 years of age, conditioned by the availability of hours in schools, and proposed reserving a specific allocation to extend it from 55. It again proposed improvements in negotiations in December 2025 and, in May 2026, requested the reduction be extended to the 55 to 58 age group.
ANPE Canarias considers that these measures "would contribute to preventing professional burnout, improving educational attention, and favoring generational renewal". Therefore, it asks the central Government for a reform that "avoids unjustified differences between teachers and demands that the Canary Islands educational administration open a concrete negotiation on the reduction of teaching hours from the age of 55".
