A total of 353,009 people of Ukrainian nationality held valid residence documentation in our country as of June 30, 2026, a figure that represents an year-on-year increase of 8.2%, with 25,675 more people compared to June 2025, driven mainly by temporary protection residence permits.
This is according to the latest statistics published by the Permanent Observatory of Immigration (OPI), dependent on the State Secretariat for Migrations, which monitors the variations of the group comprising people of Ukrainian nationality with residence documentation in our country.
If we consider the reason for granting the residence and work permit, the majority are for temporary protection: 76%, with 262,782 people. On the other hand, Ukrainian nationals who have long-term residence represent 20%, with 67,724 people.
Elma Saiz, Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migrations, stated that "in a context marked by the continuation of the conflict in Ukraine, the extension of temporary protection mechanisms remains a fundamental pillar in the integration process of this group in our country."
Temporary protection residence permits were initially approved in March 2022 through Order PCM/170/20224, for a period of one year. Subsequently, they have been extended year after year through various orders until the present, with the last validity date being March 4, 2027.
The statistics from the Permanent Observatory of Immigration reflect a prevalence of women over men. As of June 30, 2026, 58% (204,443 people) are women and 42% (148,566) are men. Among those under 16 years of age, the gender distribution is quite balanced; however, among the working-age population, women predominate, especially in the 33 to 49 age group, where their numbers are considerably higher.
Regarding the population over 65 years of age, women also predominate. This is largely due to the number of adult Ukrainian women who arrived from the beginning of the war, although the Ukrainian community settled in Spain before the conflict was already somewhat feminized in the working ages.
Regarding the provinces of residence, Alicante, Madrid, and Barcelona concentrate 43% of Ukrainian individuals with valid residence documentation as of June 30, 2026, with 62,831, 45,636, and 43,950 individuals, respectively.
The Observatory points out in this report that of the total 208,855 Ukrainian individuals aged 16 and over holding a temporary protection authorization as of June 30, 2026, 41,564, or 20%, were affiliated with Social Security according to data from the General Treasury of Social Security.
As for the 82,821 individuals with residence authorization granted for reasons other than temporary protection, 41,350 were affiliated with Social Security, a 50%.
By economic activity, the largest number of Ukrainian individuals with temporary protection authorization as of June 30, 2026, are found in the activities of ‘Hospitality’ (7,807), ‘Construction’ (6,449), ‘Telecommunications, computer programming, consulting, computer infrastructure, and other information services’ (4,144).
In relative terms, among Ukrainian individuals with temporary protection, women absolutely predominate in care and domestic service activities, while men do so in ‘Construction’, ‘Telecommunications, computer programming, consulting, computer infrastructure, and other information services’, and in the ‘Transport and storage’ section.
