The Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands has requested from the companies responsible for the electricity grid of Lanzarote, Red Eléctrica and Endesa, all the information about what happened due to the energy blackout suffered on the island in the early hours of this Saturday. This blackout affected the entire island, except for the tourist town of Playa Blanca (Yaiza), which is connected to Fuerteventura.

Furthermore, it generated a problem in the supply of drinking water, with cuts in practically the entire island, except in Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Mozaga, given that the desalination systems depend on energy to function.

During this early morning, a general energy blackout was registered in Lanzarote and La Graciosa. The power went out at 5:45 AM this Saturday, first at the Mácher station and then affected more than 76,300 customers in all municipalities of the island, which implies that the total number of people affected is much higher because only contracts are counted.

"We want to know what failed and why," the Ministry highlights in statements to the media. In this regard, they have assured that they will closely follow the technical reports detailing what happened "and, if there are responsibilities, we will demand them."

"What happened shows that we must continue reinforcing the Canary Islands' electrical system, and that is what we are working on," the Ministry has assured. "We declared an energy emergency at the beginning of our term and we are investing in improving the grids that supply electricity to homes and businesses, and in batteries to store energy, so that the system holds up better when a problem arises," they added.

For Transition, in Lanzarote, "one of the priority works" is the new power line between Tías and Playa Blanca. "It will be a more solid infrastructure and will allow, later on, the removal of the current line," they concluded.
