The general secretary of PSOE Canarias, Ángel Víctor Torres, presented this Friday his candidacy for the presidency of the Government of Canarias for the 2027 regional elections with the objective of "winning the elections again" and governing the islands "in a different way".
Torres formalized his candidacy in a crowded space at El Castillo de La Laguna, in Tenerife, before socialist militants and sympathizers from all the islands.
Torres assured that he faces this new challenge "with the same enthusiasm, even more" than when he ran for regional president for the first time. "In these complicated, difficult times of polarization, in which insults gain ground over arguments, it is time to take steps forward," he stated.
Torres maintained that the socialists' objective is "to return to the Government of Canarias and do things differently," and he vindicated the management carried out during the Pacto de las Flores, with him as president, especially in the face of the adversities that marked that legislature, such as the pandemic and the volcanic eruption of La Palma.
"We rose to the occasion of the adversities we faced," he pointed out, before arguing that Canarias is now facing different circumstances and has greater economic resources. Faced with this, he considered that during the last few years "a magnificent opportunity has been wasted".
The socialist candidate focused a good part of his speech on the defense of public services and the social difficulties that, in his opinion, the islands are currently facing.
He criticized the housing situation and the failure to declare tense areas, despite municipal requests in this regard, as well as the policy of the current Executive of CC and PP regarding public universities, free early childhood education from 0 to 3 years old, healthcare, or dependency.
Torres especially defended the need to reduce inequalities and protect those who most need public services. In this regard, he claimed that during the Pact of the Flowers, indicators of poverty were reduced and the social gap was cushioned.
“I believe a magnificent opportunity has been wasted in recent years,” stated Torres, who contrasted what he considers a commitment by the current Executive to “propaganda” with its management record.
The socialist general secretary closed his speech by reaffirming the objective with which he begins this new path: “We return with the desire to win these elections again and to preside over the Canary Islands again.”
