Torres describes the fall of housing decrees in Congress as a "stab in the back to Spaniards"

These parties "do not deserve to represent anyone in the Congress of Deputies because they put their particular interests, also partisan interests, ahead of the general interest of the people, and this must be said clearly"

The Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, stated this Friday in Tenerife that the rejection of the decrees on housing was not a defeat or a setback for the Government of Spain, but rather "a stab in the hopes of Spaniards".

In statements to the media in La Matanza (Tenerife), the minister asserted that today was "a sad day" in the Congress of Deputies due to the rejection by the Popular Party, Vox, and Junts to validate the Royal Decrees-Laws "to protect those who rent a home".

These parties "do not deserve to represent anyone in the Congress of Deputies because they put their particular interests, as well as partisan interests, ahead of the general interest of the people, and this must be said clearly," Torres pointed out, to criticize the fact that "in an absolutely astonishing, unjustified way, with partisan calculation, there have been political formations that have voted against the hopes" of the citizens.

"There are about 700,000 Canarians who have rented homes, more than 100,000 already had the security with these Royal Decrees-Laws that were validated that their rent would not be increased in 2026.

Now it can be increased," indicated Torres, who recalled that many young Canarians "have had to return to their homes because they could not pay the rent".

He added that the Canary Islands is the autonomous community where housing prices have increased the most in the second quarter of the year, with 14%, "and the PP and Vox vote against it."

"There is no justification and therefore the Canarians to whom I address myself must know this. Let them know who is with them, who votes with them, who supports them, and who turns their backs on them, stabs their hopes, and today frustrates their illusions," he argued.

The minister reiterated that "today is a sad, shameful, and disgraceful day, that in Catalonia they will be shouting 'vergonya' because Junts also voted against it, in the Puerta del Sol square, but also in the squares of the Canary Islands they are shouting 'shame' at the Popular Party and Vox because they are responsible for this ominous and shameful action".

He alluded to "the clamor of the people who today asked politicians to rise to the occasion" and the Government of Spain has put forward solutions in which "we have all had to give something up, but the parties that have given us their support have found a wall in three political formations: Partido Popular, Vox and Junts, which have turned their backs on the Spanish people".

For Ángel Víctor Torres, "the circumstance is so serious that what less can we do than reflect because if politics is not useful for solving problems, what is it useful for?", he questioned.

Likewise, he pointed out that whether there are early elections or not "is solely the decision of the president" Pedro Sánchez but, he indicated, "we cannot ignore what has happened today".
