The Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa has inaugurated this Monday the renovated César Manrique Park, popularly known as El Calvario park, after completing the comprehensive conditioning, accessibility, and modernization works of this municipal space.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Oswaldo Betancort, together with the vice-president and head of the Planning and Project Coordination area, María Jesús Tovar, and the mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín, checked firsthand the final result of the work. The inauguration ribbon was cut by the users of the Tinajo Senior Residence, a building that borders the renovated park and which will also serve for the use and stroll of the elderly.
Betancort emphasizes that “this project clearly reflects the island model we defend: a Lanzarote that moves forward without renouncing its identity and that bets on sustainability, accessibility, and quality as fundamental pillars of its development”.
In this regard, Betancort highlights that “every investment we make responds to the objective of improving the quality of life of those of us who live in Lanzarote and, at the same time, offering those who visit us an authentic experience consistent with the values that have made our island an international benchmark”.
For her part, the vice-president of the Cabildo, María Jesús Tovar, highlighted “the great work done by the technicians and workers of the Planning and Project Coordination area to make this a reality”. “Tinajo now has a large open space, accessible and for the enjoyment of the neighbors. With work and coordination, we continue to demonstrate that it is possible to transform spaces and respond to the demands and needs of citizens,” she added.
The mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín, thanked the Cabildo "for fulfilling the commitment and agreement from several years ago for the renovation and conversion of the César Manrique Park. It now has free walking spaces, integration with the residence so that the elderly residents can use it. Furthermore, we have ensured that it is a park with facilities for them, eliminating architectural barriers, they will also be able to enjoy biosanitary equipment and, in the coming months, the total renovation of the playground will be completed and more shade and calisthenics equipment will be incorporated. We have an outdoor stage for shows, with a stage and dressing rooms, and in the coming days a cafeteria very close to the playground will go up for auction".
The transformation project has had an award budget of 1,631,212.08 euros, financed through the European Next Generation EU funds from the Spanish Government's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
A completely accessible park
Among the main actions developed, the elimination of architectural barriers stands out through the execution of new adapted accesses, fully accessible ramps and itineraries, stairs, and protective railings.
Likewise, the intervention has renewed the park's landscape through the construction of paved platforms with more than 3,350 square meters of stamped concrete, the delimitation of planters with the addition of topsoil and gravel, and the planting of native species adapted to the environment.
The new César Manrique Park also incorporates a sports area with a base for a bicycle path and an area for calisthenics, as well as a new stage prepared for cultural events and a building intended for a cafeteria equipped with essential services. Likewise, and with the aim of combating high temperatures and promoting rest, the complex has installed a set of shaded areas consisting of 7 wooden and steel pergolas and 6 fixed stainless steel pergolas.
