The Tías City Council, through the environment area, has started the cleaning, treatment and recovery of the municipality's palm grove. The mayor of the municipality, José Juan Cruz Saavedra, has pointed out that these works are starting “with the aim of maintaining and ensuring the conservation of our palm grove, which suffers the consequences of different types of fungi and Diocalandra that are causing the death or deterioration of many of them”.
Cruz has pointed out that a first phase of treatment will begin that will treat about 200 palm trees located on Avenida de Las Playas in Puerto del Carmen, to later continue with the rest of the municipality.
Conserving the plant heritage
For her part, the head of the environment area, Carmen Rodríguez, explained that this process, in addition to the specific treatment for the damage caused by different types of fungi, is focused on the conservation and improvement of the same. “During the process, the palm trees will be treated specifically to know exactly how each of them is and to be able to give them the treatment they need. It is essential to carry out the necessary actions preventively to guarantee that we conserve our plant heritage in this way”, she indicated.
Likewise, Rodríguez pointed out that the deterioration of the palm trees has been accentuated by “the lack of water that we had been dragging for years”. “The drought and lack of water causes the island's palm grove to dry out and the deterioration to be further accentuated”, she added.
“From the government team we thank the company specialized in palm trees Podas Tasaigo and the company FCC, as well as the workers of Vías y Obras of the Tías city council”, concluded the head of the environment area.
