The Tías City Council flatly rejects in a press release the recent decision of the Lanzarote Island Water Consortium without the backing of the mayors of Tías, San Bartolomé, Haría, and Yaiza to raise water tariffs with an increase that could exceed 32% of the bills.
The mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, declares that “the price of decisions adopted without rigor or consensus cannot be charged to the neighbors, especially when we are talking about a basic service that drags serious operational problems”.
In this regard, he insists that any modification of the rates "must be supported by solid reports and transparent management, something that, in his opinion, has not occurred in this case".
Likewise, Cruz warns that “it is profoundly unfair to propose an increase in the water bill while continuous cuts and structural deficiencies in the network persist, and when, moreover, a transfer of the contract is being processed without the necessary legal guarantees.”
The mayor emphasizes that the Tías City Council "will continue to defend the general interest and demands that the Insular Water Consortium halt this measure until legal, technical, and economic certainties are offered that protect the citizenry."
The mayors of Tías, San Bartolomé, Haría, and Yaiza transferred this Thursday in writing to the Insular Water Consortium of Lanzarote their warning of the serious legal, technical, and economic risks that approving the tariff increase under the current conditions entails.
They recalled the serious structural deficiencies of the service with repeated supply cuts, which seriously affects the quality of life of the population of Lanzarote, as well as the increase in losses in the supply network and the lack of execution of the investments committed in the contract with Canal Gestión.
