The city councils of Arrecife and San Bartolomé have announced the suspension of all outdoor public activities and shows scheduled and the closure of all municipal sports, cultural, and any other type of facilities from this Thursday due to the passage of storm Therese.
In particular, the Arrecife City Council will close its municipal facilities from 2:00 p.m. today due to the rain alert.
For its part, San Bartolomé suspends recreational, sports, educational, and cultural activities from 15:00 hours on this March 19, 2026, and until the end of the alert for coastal phenomena and pre-alert for floods, rain, storms, and wind.
The administrations recommend to the population to avoid, as far as possible, any type of leisure or recreational activity in open spaces.
Furthermore, citizens are urged to stay informed through the official channels of the Arrecife City Council and the San Bartolomé City Council, as well as to collaborate with the indications and recommendations issued by the emergency agencies.
Activation of the PEMU in Arrecife
The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, has signed this Thursday, March 19, the decree for the activation of the PEMU, Municipal Emergency Plan, given the declarations of alerts activated by the Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Emergencies, where it is declared that the alert has been raised in Lanzarote, in addition to all the other islands of the Canary archipelago.
The mayor's decision has been made taking into account the information provided by the State Meteorological Agency and the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands, in application of the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA), where strong winds, rain, and coastal phenomena are forecast, due to the passage of storm Therese.
Given this situation, and as a precaution, the City Council has decreed the PEMU in alert form, which allows deploying a standby team to assist the population if possible. This standby team, according to what is established in the municipal protocol for PEMU activation, is formed by members of the Local Police, Civil Protection, and personnel from the Public Works, Mobility, and Transport areas, among others. Likewise, the mayor has signed today the decree suspending outdoor activities and in covered municipal facilities, it will be from 2:00 p.m. this Thursday, 7:00 p.m., and until the end of the alert by the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Canarian Executive.
From the Local Police of Arrecife, different streets prone to flooding have already been cordoned off this midday. Likewise, the Department of Mobility and Transport, headed by councilman Mario González Altube, fences have been placed to redirect traffic in those streets sensitive to episodes of flooding due to rain- specified in the content of the Arrecife Emergency Plan- such as Portugal, Doctor Fleming streets ( both in the La Verga neighborhood, or El Antonio street, in the Titerroy neighborhood, in the vicinity of the Insular School of Languages, a street adjacent to one of the sides of the Lanzarote Sports City.
