Last Saturday, the surroundings of Zonzamas once again showed an image surrounded by waste, mostly plastics. This episode is not a recent case; previously, in 2023, a tide of plastics was recorded on the hillside around the environmental complex, which involved a large cleanup with the collaboration of the Arrecife and Teguise City Councils for immediate cleaning and, subsequently, the Cabildo de Lanzarote assured continued periodic care of the area.
The Cabildo assures that they have 20 people dedicated to cleaning who work every weekday, and on weekends, they have reserves. From the institution, they comment that it is an isolated incident due to the strong winds in recent weeks, including pre-alerts. Likewise, the images seen last Saturday have already been collected this week, as confirmed to La Voz.
Last year, the Zonzamas facility accumulated 95 tons of waste, almost 2% more than the previous year, according to the report from Lanzarote en Cifras of the Data Center. In that same year, the Cabildo de Lanzarote presented a new project with an investment of 10 million euros for the reform of Zonzamas, with the aim of minimizing waste generation and improving environmental responsibility, among other objectives.
Within this project, last April the implementation of new brown garbage containers began. This new implementation will lead to a new composting plant that will collect about 2,600 tons annually, as explained by Domingo Cejas, Councilor for Waste.
A few months ago, the second court of the Instruction Section of the Arrecife Court of First Instance opened a criminal investigation, with Domingo Cejas as the investigated party, for the fire that occurred at the Zonzamas landfill in 2024, as reported by La Voz.
