The General Assembly of the Insular Water Consortium of Lanzarote has approved, in its meeting this morning, a budget for the fiscal year 2026 amounting to 6,187,625.12 euros. This budget prioritizes investment in hydraulic infrastructure, sanitation, and improvement of the integral water cycle in Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

The general accounts of the Water Consortium for 2026 represent a 4.2% increase compared to the 2025 fiscal year and include an investment of 2.99 million euros, which accounts for almost half of the total actual operating expenses.

"With the investments we have planned, we will achieve improved supply reliability, reduced network losses, progress in wastewater treatment, and the modernization of essential infrastructure for the well-being of citizens and the economic development of Lanzarote and La Graciosa," highlights the president of the Cabildo and the Lanzarote Water Consortium, Oswaldo Betancort.

In the General Assembly, the approval of the Extraordinary Plan of Actions and Guarantees for the Integral Water Cycle in Lanzarote and La Graciosa (PEAGUA) was noted. This is a temporary employment program that will double the Consortium's staff, with the hiring of nine workers for the next three years with a one-year extension, and whose purpose is to develop all the actions proposed within the framework of the declaration of the Water Emergency with 20 million in financing already allocated from subsidies from other administrations, as well as to strengthen the control of the concessionaire of the Integral Water Cycle.

With the PEAGUA, the Water Consortium will temporarily hire an industrial engineer, three technical engineers, a general administration technician (lawyer or economist), two field monitors, an administrator, and an administrative assistant.

The hiring of two field or construction site security guards allows for job opportunities for vocational training students in the advanced training cycle for technicians in Networks and Water Treatment.

Investments in improving the integrated water cycle

The investment chapter (Chapter VI) represents the most prominent block of the budget, with 2,933,794.32 euros, allocated to key actions for the modernization and expansion of island networks.

Among the most relevant items are the renovation, expansion and modification of hydraulic infrastructures and equipment: 1,851,734.92 euros; actions for the renovation of supply and sanitation networks: 400,000 euros; infrastructures for supply and sanitation: 150,000 euros; measures for sanitation, treatment and expansion of outfalls in Arrecife: 200,000 euros; expansion and improvement of the Tías Wastewater Treatment Plant: 200,000 euros; equipment and technological material (computer equipment, furniture, machinery): 20,000 euros, and for boreholes in the Timanfaya aquifer: 112,059.40 euros.

The 2026 budget maintains a specific allocation intended to support the primary sector, with a subsidy of 200,000 euros to reduce the price of agricultural water.

The set of these investments is aimed at improving water efficiency, ensuring the availability of drinking water, strengthening sanitation, and modernizing critical infrastructures that require renovation due to their age and operational load.
