The Governing Council of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa has agreed to dismiss the authorization of two tourist projects planned in Playa Blanca, in the municipality of Yaiza, due to non-compliance with sectoral regulations that prevent their authorization.

The first corresponds to a project for an expansion that includes 154 accommodation units and 308 beds. The technical report from the Department of Tourism Planning determines that the northern area of the expansion has three floors that are not connected by an elevator, thus failing to comply with applicable regulations, and there is no record of a waiver granted by the Government of the Canary Islands. For this reason, the Governing Council dismisses the authorization and provisional classification requested for the expansion.

The second file affects the change of use of a single-family home to a tourist villa, also in Playa Blanca, planned for one accommodation unit and 14 beds. The resolution states that the proposed capacity does not align with the pre-existing reality of the dwelling, that its layout and access do not prevent contracting by rooms or the coexistence of different users, and that it does not have all the minimum mandatory equipment.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Oswaldo Betancort, pointed out that “these resolutions respond to technical criteria and compliance with regulations. Tourism planning requires rigor and legal certainty, especially on an island that must responsibly manage its accommodation capacity and its territory”.

Betancort added that “the Cabildo is exercising its powers and resolving the files with clear rules. Each project must demonstrate that it meets the established conditions before obtaining a tourism authorization”.

For his part, the Minister of Territorial Policy, Jesús Machín, explained that “the technical reports detect specific non-compliance issues that prevent the authorization of both projects as proposed. The Cabildo's obligation is to apply the regulations and ensure that the tourist activities developed in Lanzarote have all the guarantees”.

Machín recalled that the island institution "continues working on updating territorial planning instruments to provide Lanzarote with a clear framework that offers legal certainty and allows for the compatibility of economic activity with the protection of the territory, a line already defended by the Cabildo in previous resolutions on tourism authorizations".
