The PSOE of Tinajo has demanded that the president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, and the mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín, "immediately" rectify the project for the installation of a wind turbine more than 70 meters high in La Santa, linked to the modernization and digitalization of irrigation works promoted through the agreement between SEIASA and the Insular Council of Waters of Lanzarote.
The socialist spokesperson in the Tinajo City Council, Begoña Hernández, has pointed out that “we are talking about a colossal infrastructure, taller than the Gran Hotel in Arrecife, which is intended to be installed in an area of enormous landscape, environmental, and natural value for Lanzarote”.
Irreversible damage to the territory
The socialist spokesperson has stressed that the project responds to the needs, decisions, and approaches agreed upon from Lanzarote. “The State provides the money, but the project is the result of what local authorities ask for, decide, and validate. This action has been agreed upon with the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the Tinajo City Council. Therefore, Oswaldo Betancort and Jesús Machín cannot stand aside from an infrastructure that arises from decisions made here,” Hernández stated.
The socialist spokesperson has been particularly critical of the attitude of Coalición Canaria and the Partido Popular when it comes to assuming responsibilities. “When it's time to take a photo for the inauguration, no one asks who is providing the money. They take credit for the work, investment, and impetus of other administrations. But when the project generates rejection or threatens the territory, then they try to disappear from the scene,” she denounced.
The PSOE of Tinajo has considered it "unacceptable" that an infrastructure of these dimensions is being proposed in the surroundings of La Santa, a coastal area that has preserved a good part of its identity and must be protected from aggressive, disproportionate interventions that are alien to the scale of the Lanzarote landscape. “Irrigation can be modernized, the primary sector can be supported, and clean energy can be advanced without destroying the landscape, without imposing a brutal visual impact, and without endangering unique species and natural values,” declared the socialist spokesperson.
The PSOE of Tinajo has demanded that the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the City Council of Tinajo "urgently" request the technical, environmental, and landscape review of the project, that they study less harmful alternatives, and that they guarantee "the maximum protection of the affected area". “Jesús Machín and Oswaldo Betancort still have time to rectify. What they cannot do is look the other way while an infrastructure inappropriate for this environment is being built. La Santa and the coast of Tinajo deserve respect, protection, and responsible management,” concluded Begoña Hernández.
